Simplify your enquiry with the SARS Online Enquiry System

Where can I access it from?

There are 3 ways to access your query online:

Option 1: Go to the SARS website at www.sars.gov.za. On the Home page, click on SARS Online Enquiry System. All options will appear under Using our digital channels.

Option 2: On the SARS website www.sars.gov.za, click on ‘Contact us’ at the top of the screen. All available options within SOQS are displayed under the heading ‘Send us a query’. Click on the query subject and follow the prompts that appear on the screen.

Option 3: Click on the “Send us an inquiry” link in the grey list. A list of all inquiry types will appear with a link next to each one. Click on the relevant link to process the request.

How to use

To initiate a query:

  • Select Query Type
  • Fill out the online form
  • Fill in the required information fields
  • Please attach supporting documents if necessary
  • Submit to SARS
  • Complete the CAPTCHA screen

In some cases, supporting documents and tax reference details are not required.

In some cases (eg, requesting a file), the OTP may be used for identification before completing the query.

In some cases (e.g. for Tax Compliance Status – TCS), the query can be completed by a registered taxpayer (select “Myself”), a tax practitioner (select “Another person for whom I am a registered representative”) or “Other” (for partnerships/joint ventures).

To “Apply for Your Tax File Number”, please ensure the contact details registered are correct as SOQS will respond with this information. If it is incorrect, please update it in e-filing or in branch.

Example of how to request a customs code and RLA status on SOQS:

Customs Code Example

You will need your business trading name and type of identification (company registration number, passport number, South African identification number).

RLA Status Example

You will need your company’s trading name, case number, RLA application number and type of ID (company registration number, passport number, South African ID number).
