Six-figure car sales exploded, up 333% in 2020

Automakers sold 52,000 cars worth over $100,000 in the first two months of the year, marking a 13% increase in 2024

Luxury cars are owning theirs when you’ve been working to prevent financial exit from tracks moment again. Cox Automotive’s latest Kelley Blue Book reports that the number of people squandering six-figure vehicles is surprising.

If you’re wondering how deep your pockets are these days, prepare for the shock: Luxury cars are flying out of dealers, and if you don’t have at least $100,000 to throw away your new ride, you might feel a little behind.

In the first two months of 2025 alone, the United States delivered more than 52,000 new cars of more than $100,000. That’s an impressive 13% compared to the 46,000 people sold last year, and an incredible 333% peak compared to five years ago, with 12,000 six-figure cars sold. So it is safe to say that many people are not only fantasizing about luxury goods—actually Buy it.

So, who is fighting for a six-digit battle? Surprisingly, the undisputed champion of 2025 is the Range Rover, with over 3,800 monthly sales in February alone. It seems that the British brand has secured the crown jewelry of six figures.

Erin Keating, executive analyst Cox Automobileput forward some perspectives on this trend: “While affordability is a challenge for many families, six-figure vehicles have continued to sell well since the beginning of 2020, with sales quadrupled.”

Keating also noted that the widening income gap will greatly affect new vehicle sales trends, with high-income families and individuals with “Prime” or “Super Prime” credit scores fueling many demands.

Now, let’s talk about the average trading price (ATP) of a new car. In February 2025, the average transaction price (ATP) of the new car was US$48,039. It was a 1.3% decline since January, but it still increased by 1% compared to the same period last year.

If you want to know which segments raise ATP above the $100,000 mark, it’s just the usual suspects: luxurious full-size SUVs ($106,332), high-end luxury cars ($121,129) and high-performance vehicles ($121,322), showing full-year growth. There are no surprises there, right?

On the luxury brand front, Porsche ranked first in the ATP in February, 12% higher than last year. On the other end, Mitsubishi’s lowest ATP bonus is $30,410, while Nissan is behind $32,262. So if you’ve been focusing on a luxury SUV or a sports car, you know now who’s at the top of the price ladder.

For those who prefer quieter zero tailpipe emissions, electric cars will also be mixed together. The average ATP of electric vehicles in February was $55,273, down 1.2% from January but up 3.7% from last year. EV incentives also rose sharply, reaching an average of $8,162, the highest in five years.

Keating also reflected how much the overall automotive landscape has changed, noting: “February marks the fifth anniversary of the “clean month” of the global Covid Pandemic, with an increase of 25% compared to February 2020, while monthly sales are higher, so ATP is up 25% because of higher sales prices, thus the rate is higher than 9%. The real challenge for most households.”
