This latest development will force Slavia and Kushaq buyers to opt for the pricier automatic transmission models if the 1.5L EVO TSI engine is a priority
Slavia and Kushaq have been a turning point for Skoda in India since their launch. Slavia was launched under the India 2.0 strategy of SAVWIPL (Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd) and is based on the Indian version of the MQB A0 IN and currently we sell 4 cars based on this model here – Kushaq, Slavia, Taigun and Virtus.
The performance-packed 1.5L EVO TSI engine has always been a highlight for thrill seekers and enthusiasts. However, the latest development by Skoda Auto will make automotive purists and some enthusiasts frown as the company has just removed the manual transmission option that comes with the 1.5L EVO TSI.
Slavia and Kushak 1.5L MT
In August 2024, Skoda sold nearly 2,800 vehicles, lagging behind Volkswagen’s approximately 3,600. Skoda seems to be aware of their target demographic, because they have just made what some consider to be a risky move.
By discontinuing the 1.5L EVO TSI MT model on the Slavia and Kushaq, Skoda will no longer cater to the growing group of car enthusiasts and purists. Also, there may be a section of the population who are looking for affordable performance and the manual transmission model fits their budget perfectly.

Even the just-launched top-of-the-range Slavia Monte Carlo and Sportline Edition do not have the 1.5L EVO TSI MT powertrain combination. Buyers looking for a C-segment sedan or SUV with similar styling to the Skoda Slavia and Kushaq might consider Volkswagen’s Virtus and Taigun, both of which still have multiple variants with the 1.5L EVO TSI MT gearbox combination.
Volkswagen’s monthly sales in India could improve after Skoda discontinued the 1.5L EVO TSI MT powertrain combination. At a time when the Volkswagen Group is in serious global trouble, improved sales in India could better highlight its position in the Asian subcontinent.
No other changes
Skoda Slavia and Kushaq are available with two turbocharged petrol engines – 1.0L 3-cylinder TSI engine and 1.5L 4-cylinder TSI engine. The former outputs 114 bhp power and 178 Nm peak torque. However, it is the 1.5L EVO TSI with a peak power of 148 bhp and a peak torque of 250 Nm that shines.

This engine is now available only with 7-speed DSG and there is no 6-speed manual option. The 1.0L TSI engine is still available with manual and 6-speed torque converter. The recently launched Slavia Monte Carlo Edition and the Sportline Editions of Slavia and Kushaq are expected to boost sales during the all-important festive season.
