Smart’s transformation continues as the company unveiled its new #5 crossover. This car is a far cry from the old ForTwo as it is a premium mid-size SUV with a high-tech interior comparable to that of a Mercedes.
The crossover, which will go on sale in Europe early next year, has a unique front fascia with “rectangular headlights” connected by a thin light bar and a series of oval lights. Further back, there’s plastic body cladding and streamlined bodywork.

Designers also gave the model flush door handles and aerodynamically optimised wheels with floating centre caps, just like in a Rolls-Royce, as well as a flowing cabin and a prominent D-pillar with the Smart logo.
Customers who want a more rugged model can opt for the Summit Edition. It adds a roof light bar, side steps and a ladder for easy access to the included roof rack. This model also features underbody protection, an electric trailer hitch and external storage boxes similar to those found on the Land Rover Defender.
In terms of dimensions, the #5 is 185.2 inches (4,705 mm) long and has a wheelbase of 114.2 inches (2,900 mm). In comparison, the Mercedes GLC is 0.5 inches (13 mm) longer but has a wheelbase that is 1.1 inches (28 mm) shorter.
The upscale styling continues inside, where customers will find premium leather, oak wood trim, and zero-gravity front seats that recline 121 degrees. The model also features a 256-color ambient lighting system and a 21-speaker Sennheiser sound system.
While the interior is elegant, it’s dominated by a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster and two 13-inch displays. The center display serves as the infotainment system, featuring a lion head named Leo and a “state-of-the-art generative AI voice assistant (which) uses a variety of sources to provide precise answers to nearly any question.” Keeping with the tech theme, there’s also a 25.6-inch augmented reality head-up display.
Rear passengers won’t be treated like second-class citizens, as they’ll find heated seats with adjustable backrests. The model also comes with “powered sun visors” as well as “aircraft-style LED reading lights with a ‘first class’ setting,” and a comfort mode that gives passengers more legroom by moving the front seats forward.
The seats can be folded down to create a king-size, queen-size or single bed in the cabin. Buyers will also find 34 storage compartments, a trunk and a spacious cargo area that can accommodate up to 54 cubic feet (1,530 liters) of luggage.
Smart did not reveal powertrain details, but confirmed that the model is equipped with a 100 kWh battery pack that provides more than 460 miles (740 km) of range in the CLTC cycle. The company also revealed that the crossover uses 800V technology and supercharging capabilities to charge the battery from 10% to 80% in 15 minutes.
While Smart is being really silly, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has previously revealed that the crossover will feature a rear-mounted motor with outputs of 335 hp (250 kW / 340 PS) and 358 hp (267 kW / 363 PS). In addition, the car will also feature a dual-motor all-wheel drive system that pairs a 221 hp (165 kW / 224 PS) front motor with either a 358 hp (267 kW / 363 PS) or 416 hp (310 kW / 422 PS) rear motor.
