Smart’s new #5 compact SUV is not coming to the United States

The loose but stylish Tesla Model Y competitor is Smart’s largest electric car to date, with three-screen interiors and a 366-mile WLTP series on European land

 Smart's new #5 compact SUV isn't coming to the U.S., it's a mistake
  • After the revelation in China last year, Smart launched the #5 SUV in Europe.
  • The Tesla Model Y-EV has a 100 kWh battery with a range of 366 miles.
  • The brand has no plans to expand its #1, #3 and #5 electric vehicles lineup to North America.

Sometimes the smartest products are not the most radical. They are those who take existing ideas and make them better, like this new Smart #5, which debuted this week in Europe seven months after launching in China.

The third and largest of the three electric SUVs and crossovers of the new smart company, the #5 isn’t as clever as the original Fortwo, tucking space for two passengers into an impossible small package. But it’s definitely a smart move to be the best-selling electric car in Europe and the United States even after slowing sales.

The #5 has a length of 4,695mm (184.8 inches), riding a 2,900mm (114.2 inches) wheelbase, which is almost exactly the same size as the recently made-up model Y. However, it is more visually appealing to our eyes, with a strong chin and is round enough in the corners to make the wide Silhouette friendly and friendly with the friendly vibe vibe. Neat design details include the wheels’ Rolls Royce-style floating center cover, frameless door glass, and on the rugged summit version, electric trailer hooks, roof racks and side ladders.

Under the skin is the PMA2+ building from Geely, China, which is now co-owned with Mercedes and can also be found under other Geely products such as Zeekr 7X. This distinguishes #5 from the little brother who relies on a smaller sea platform and uses 400 volt electricity, while #5 has 800 volt technology for faster filling.

Up to 366 miles

The largest smart Basic #5 Pro version can be equipped with a 76 kWh LFP battery, but Pricier Pro+ Trims and upgrades to a higher upgrade to 100 kWh NCM NCM Power Pack. Smart isn’t saying how far this little guy will bring you, but given the big battery needs to juice after 366 WLTP miles (589 km) it may be less than 300 miles (483 km).

It attracts a charger fast enough that it will refill from 10-80% in 18 minutes, and like the Hyundai-Kia Electric Vehicle, the #5 has a load power outlet to help you make the most of your trip to large outdoor activities.

Smart hasn’t released all the technical specifications, although it does say the more expensive dual-motion pulse and peak version models can go from zero to 62 mph (100 kmh) in 4.9 seconds. Last year, we learned from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China that the AWD version is paired with a 221 hp (165 kW / 224 PS) front motor with a 358 hp (267 kW / 363 PS) rear motor or 416 hp (310 kW / 422 PS) rear motor.

The same Chinese MIIT information drop shows that the cheaper single motor, rear-wheel drive #5s has an output of 335 hp (250 kW / 340 PS) or 358 hp (267 kW / 363 PS), although it is not clear whether Europe offers a fairly similar power option. But it seems you can use a 100 kWh battery for a single motor setup, which we guess is a battery with a 366-mile range.

Three screens and sleep

Opening the door, the cabin looks more popular and more distinct than the interior of the Tesla model. Smart bragging, realistic displays about heated rear seats, electric sunshine, aircraft-style LED reading lights, 256-color ambient lighting, 20-speaker Sennheiser Hifi and 25.6-inch augmented augmented reality reality.

You’ll also get a three-dashboard that consists of a 10.25-inch digital gauge package and two 13-inch OLED touch screens whose video streaming and gaming abilities are enhanced by the Unreal 3D engine. However, this is not all about gadgets. The #5 seating can be adjusted so you can visit passengers as soon as possible during the charging stop, and there is a convenient 72-liter (2.54 cubic feet) pores to handle the trunk you can’t fit into the Y-shaped Y. Tesla also offers small seats for third row seats, which #5 doesn’t have.

When will the sales start?

Although #5 first appeared in China a year ago, European buyers won’t place orders until Q4 2025, and prices are expected to be closer to that time. But at least it’s coming. We can’t help thinking that this chunky SUV will do well in the U.S., but Smart has no plans to bring it or the brand to the U.S., and Trump’s tough import tariffs mean that the position is unlikely to change anytime soon.
