BMW has issued a massive recall of more than 720,000 vehicles in the U.S. that have defective water pumps. If you own or know anyone who owns a BMW built between 2012 and 2018, you need to pay close attention.

According to a recall notice issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), leaking fluid from the positive crankcase ventilation system may collect on the intake hose. This could cause fluid to drip onto the plug connector, which over time could cause a short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire.

The recall affects the 2012-2015 X1 sDrive28i, X1 xDrive28i, 2012-2016 Z4 sDrive28i, 528i, 528i xDrive, 328i, 328xi, 2016-2018 X5 xdrive 40e, 2014-2016 228i, 228xi, 428i, 428i xDrive, 328xi Gran Turismo, 2013-2017 X3 sDrive28i, X3 xDrive28i, 2015-2018 X4 xDrive28i and 2015-2016 428xi vehicles. A total of 720,796 vehicles are affected by the recall. The problem is most prevalent in BMW 328i and 328xi models from the 2012 to 2016 model years, affecting a total of 236,702 vehicles.

The automaker first became aware of the potential issue on March 19, 2024, when it was contacted by South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport regarding a vehicle fire. BMW launched an investigation and learned of a similar incident in the United States in January.
In the following months, BMW tested field parts, analyzed the water pump and investigated the plug connector. It found that under certain rare vehicle operating conditions, the seal of the electric plug connector could be compromised by leaking fluid dripping from the intake hose.
BMW told NHTSA it was aware of 18 customer complaints, concerns and field reports that may be related to the problem in the United States, but it was not aware of any accidents or injuries.
Owners of affected models will receive recall notices starting Oct. 4 and will be instructed to take their vehicles to dealers, who will inspect and, if necessary, replace the water pump and plug. Dealers will also install a shield to divert any fluid that may drip onto the water pump from the crankcase ventilation system’s intake hose.
