Stellantis produced just under 500,000 cars in Italy last year

  • Last year’s performance made sluggish production figures for 2023 look optimistic.
  • Stellantis’ Mirafiori plant will see a 70% drop in production in 2024.
  • Production at Maserati’s plant in Modena, Italy, fell 79%.

Eighteen months ago, Stellantis reached an agreement with the Italian government to increase its annual production in the country to 1 million units. However, by 2024, the brand’s local production has dropped significantly by 37%, with less than 500,000 cars produced, which means it still has a long way to go if it is to fulfill its promises.

One of the hardest-hit Stellantis factories is its Mirafiori factory in Turin, Italy, where production fell by 70% last year. Reuters Report. The automaker halted production at the plant multiple times through much of 2024, largely due to a lack of demand for the all-electric Fiat 500e produced at the plant. A week before Christmas, Stellantis said it would extend factory production cuts until February 3.

Shortly after Carlos Tavares resigned as Stellantis boss in early December, the group announced a multi-billion-euro investment in Italian production. This year, the company will keep all local factories open and invest 2 billion euros ($2.1 billion) in the local market. Several important new models are under development, including the next-generation Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV and Giulia sports sedan. In addition, starting in 2028, at least two new compact models will be produced at its Pomigliano D’Arco plant in southern Italy.

The troubled Mirafiori plant will also get a boost in late 2025 to produce a hybrid version of the 500. Stellantis has also committed to continuing production of the 500 at the plant until 2032 or 2033.
