Subaru Solterra STI rumored to debut in 2025, hopefully not like Germany's 'sporty' STe
  • The Subaru Solterra facelift expected next year may include a performance-focused STI trim.
  • Development of the STI model is reportedly focused on improving the handling capabilities of electric vehicles.
  • As of November 2023, a sporty version of the Solterra STe has been available in Germany.

After years of speculation, a new report out of Japan suggests Subaru’s electric crossover Solterra may finally get a long-rumored STI version next year. To coincide with the electric crossover’s mid-life refresh, this performance-focused variant will likely receive a number of upgrades, although it’s more likely to focus on handling rather than sheer horsepower.

STI concept, but no performance promises

Performance Solterra’s idea isn’t purely wishful thinking. Subaru unveiled the STI concept car and the supercar-like STI E-RA study at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon, but did not reveal specific specifications. At the time, there were rumors that the production model would be launched in the summer of 2024. But as months passed without STI news, that timeline started to look increasingly optimistic.

Fast forward to today, Japan exports best car Back with new information that reheats those old rumors with a new twist. The publication now claims that the performance-focused Solterra will go on sale in 2025 as part of a facelift focused on improving the electric car’s e-TNGA underpinnings.

While the new STI trim is expected to keep the same dual electric motors, power and torque may be boosted through software tweaks. While a significant increase in horsepower seems unlikely, reports indicate that Subaru is prioritizing improving the Solterra STI’s handling. The goal seems to be to deliver a more engaging driving experience, complemented by sportier design elements – think sharper body kit and wheels that echo the concept’s style. At the very least, the Solterra STI should look the part, even if it doesn’t quite meet performance expectations.

Could Toyota’s bZ4x get the same treatment?

Subaru’s electric twin, the Toyota bZ4x, is also expected to get a facelift in 2025, which makes us wonder if it could take inspiration from the 2022 GR Sport concept and get similar sporty trim. A few years ago, the chief engineer of the bZ series mentioned discussions with Gazoo Racing about a more powerful bZ4x, but specific details were never revealed.

Subaru Solterra STe

Do you know Solterra STe?

If you’re tired of waiting for a Subaru Tecnica International-badged Solterra, there’s an alternative, although it appears to be only available in the German market. The Solterra STe actually debuted in November 2023, but for some reason it didn’t get the attention of most automotive media.

The sportiest Solterra also replaces the usual plastic cladding with body-coloured panels and rides on 20-inch black alloy wheels, giving it a more aggressive, road-worthy appearance. Other highlights include STe badging on the exterior and custom floor mats. However, the flashier looks aren’t backed up by any performance upgrades, meaning the Solterra STe still relies on the stock AWD powertrain, delivering a modest 215 horsepower (160 kW / 218 PS). In today’s electric SUV market, this is hardly a powerhouse.

The STe package is available as a €3,500 ($3,700) option on Solterra’s high-spec Platinum and Platinum Plus trims. The latter is priced at 53,890 euros, which means a full-spec Soltera STe will cost up to 57,390 euros ($60,400) in Germany.

For comparison, a quick look at Tesla’s website shows that in the same market, the new Model Y Performance sells for just €54,970 ($57,900). The Tesla is more than twice as powerful as the Subaru, producing 527 hp (393 kW/534 hp), and has a longer WLTP range of 514 km (319 miles). The difference in performance and price explains why you don’t see many Soltera STes cruising on German roads.
