Summer 2024 visit to Philadelphia will be record-breaking »

Hotel room sales and international tourist spending surge by more than 8% in summer 2023

Philadelphia More people than ever will visit Philadelphia during the 2024 summer, the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau announced today. Boosted by major events such as WrestleMania Visit spending exceeds pre-pandemic levels.

At the bureau’s annual luncheon celebrating Philadelphia’s hospitality industry, PHLCVB President and CEO Gregg Caren announced that more than 1.6 million room nights were sold in Center City Philadelphia from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day 2024. That’s an increase of 8.2% in 2023 and, according to Tourism Economics, the city’s highest ever figure.

also:

  • The record number of sold room nights was primarily driven by Philadelphia in two weeks:
    • The Alzheimer’s Association International Conference is attended by more than 12,000 people from more than 100 countries.
    • The Jehovah’s Witnesses Conference was held at the Wells Fargo Center and was attended by more than 3,000 delegates from nearly 30 countries.
    • The Liverpool/Arsenal football match at Lincoln Financial Field attracts international and domestic fans.
  • During the summer of 2024, revenue per available room (RevPAR) increased 51% compared to 2023, with significant growth on dates when demand from all three activities overlapped.
  • Between May and August 2023, passenger arrivals at Philadelphia International Airport increased by nearly 7%.
  • Between May and August 2023, international tourist spending increased by 8% compared with 2023.
  • So far in 2024, international visitor spending is up 27% compared to 2023. This reflects longer visitor stays and greater engagement with our city’s attractions, dining and experiences.

Cullen praised the more than 850 hospitality professionals who gathered at the Franklin Institute for “revitalizing the city” for conference attendees and international visitors. “This city is a mix of history, culture, art and innovation, and everyone plays a role… Philadelphia is more than just a city, it’s an experience that people come back to again and again,” Cullen said. ”

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker added that tourism, conferences and events support more than 80,000 workers in the region. Mayor Parker thanked the PHLCVB and said the record numbers come at the perfect time. “Thanks to the work of PHLCVB, Philadelphia’s profile has been raised around the world by hosting major conferences, sporting events and attracting international visitors. All of these efforts are essential as we prepare to face the world of 2026 – Invitation Everyone experiences our city’s history, culture and hospitality.”

The birthplace of the United States and the first World Heritage City, Philadelphia will be at the center of celebrations of America’s half-century, the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, on July 4, 2026. In addition, the Philadelphia area will host a number of major international sporting events and conferences, including:

  • 2026 FIFA World Cup™ Six Matches
  • 2026 MLB All-Star Game
  • 2026 PGA Championship
  • 2026 PMCA calls for leaders

In addition to attracting major events, Philadelphia also benefits from American Airlines’ investment in PHL as a transatlantic gateway. In 2024, American Airlines launches three nonstop seasonal routes from Philadelphia: Copenhagen, Nice and Naples. The airline recently announced that all three routes will return in 2025, along with new seasonal routes to Milan and Edinburgh, giving international travelers more opportunities than ever to visit the City of Brotherly Love.
