It’s unclear why the Santa Fe driver thought he was trying to evade capture in this way

- Police have not yet released details about the man who reversed his car on Ford Road.
- After backing up the vehicle for more than a mile, the driver decided to surrender.
Trying to run from the police is a bad idea and almost never ends well. Apparently the driver of the Hyundai Santa Fe never got the memo, and not only did he think he could outrun the authorities, he thought he could do it while backing up a family SUV. As you might imagine, things didn’t go well.
It started last Tuesday afternoon in Dearborn, Michigan, when police spotted a suspected stolen Hyundai at a BP gas station and tried to stop the suspect. Instead of acting wisely and complying with the officer’s orders, the driver put the SUV into reverse and hit the gas.

Initially, the driver can be seen circling the gas station, through the gas station, hitting a silver Chevy pickup truck, and then slamming the front end of a Ford Explorer police cruiser that arrived at the scene. Moments later, the Santa Fe driver exited the parking lot and headed toward Ford Road.
Anyone who knows anything about cars will know that you can’t go very fast when in reverse, so the chase never reaches high speeds. However, it was still very dangerous as there were many other cars on the road and the SUV repeatedly swerved left and right, presumably as the driver tried to control it.
Police let the pursuit continue along Ford Road for about a mile before the Santa Fe driver decided to pull over. Authorities quickly moved in and arrested the man.
The driver’s name has not been released, and it’s unclear where the Hyundai was stolen from, but WXYZ notes it has Florida license plates.
