The subcompact SUV segment (3.8 meters to 4 meters) showed strong growth in December 2024, with total sales of 89,008 units compared to 76,811 units in December 2023, a significant year-on-year increase of 15.88%. Below is the performance of each model:
SUV sales below 4 million units in December 2024 – year-on-year comparison
Maruti Brezza maintained its dominance, leading the segment with sales of 17,336 units, a year-on-year growth of 34.97% compared to 12,844 units in December 2023. Tata Punch (including its electric models) ranked second with sales of 15,073 units, a growth of 9.33% from December 2023. Last year it was 13,787. The recently updated Tata Nexon (including its electric variant) slipped to third place with sales of 13,536 units, down 11.44% from 15,284 units in December 2023. Maruti Fronx showed continued growth with 10,752 units sold, a growth of 10.94% from 9,692 units last year. Hyundai Venue remained stable with 10,265 units sold, a slight decrease of 1.14% compared to 10,383 units sold in December last year.
Mahindra XUV3X0 achieved a staggering growth of 97.18% with sales of 7,000 units in December 2024 as compared to 3,550 units in December 2023. On the other hand, Hyundai Exter saw a significant decline of 29.88% with sales of 5,270 units compared to 7,516 units last year. Kia Sonet witnessed a remarkable jump with sales of 3,337 units in December 2024 as against only 10 units sold in December 2023, a growth of an astronomical 33,270%. The Toyota Taisor sold 2,628 units, further boosting the segment.
Meanwhile, Nissan Magnite sales fell slightly by 1.53%, with sales of 2,117 units compared to 2,150 units last year. Maruti Jimny grew significantly with sales of 1,100 units, a growth of 50.68% from 730 units in December 2023. However, Renault Kiger sales were 594 units, down 31.33% from 865 units in December last year.

Maruti Brezza continued to maintain its dominance in December 2024 with a significant month-on-month (MoM) growth of 16.21%. Sales increased to 17,336 units from 14,918 units in November, demonstrating its strong market position. Sales of Tata Punch, including its electric models, fell slightly by 2.35%, with sales of 15,073 units in December as against 15,435 units in November.
Tata Nexon (including EV models) fell 11.70% month-on-month, with sales falling from 15,329 units in November to 13,536 units in December. Maruti Fronx sales fell significantly by 27.75%, with sales falling from 14,882 units in November to 10,752 units in December.
Hyundai Venue showed resilience, growing 5.24% month-on-month, with sales increasing from 9,754 units in November to 10,265 units in December. On the other hand, Mahindra XUV3X0 sales fell by 8.57% with sales of 7,000 units in December as compared to 7,656 units in November. Hyundai Exter also recorded a decline of 8.30%, with sales falling from 5,747 units in November to 5,270 units in December. The Kia Sonet suffered the biggest decline in the segment, with sales falling 63.94% from 9,255 units in November to 3,337 units in December.
Toyota Taisor also experienced a sharp decline of 27.40%, with sales falling from 3,620 units in November to 2,628 units in December. Nissan Magnite sales fell 9.61%, with sales decreasing from 2,342 units in November to 2,117 units in December. However, the Maruti Jimny grew by 11.34%, with sales increasing from 988 units in November to 1,100 units in December. Meanwhile, Renault Kiger sales fell by 23.75%, with sales falling from 779 units in November to 594 units in December.
