President Trump threatens new tariffs on European alcohol
Today, on March 13, President Donald Trump announced potential tariffs on wine, cognac and other alcohols imported from Europe. The statement is in response to the EU's plan to impose tariffs on U.S. whiskey and other products since April, a countermeasure to Trump's 25% tariff on steel and aluminum that came into effect yesterday on March 12. The European Commission did not immediately comment on Trump's announcement. In 2024, the United States imported about $5.4 billion of wine from the EU, including about $1.7 billion of sparkling wine, according to the Census Bureau. It also imports more than $1 billion in beer and more than $3.5 billion in spirits such as vodka, gin and whiskey.
