Celebrating Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders

Yamaguchi Kento is the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for U.S. Affairs. May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. It’s a time to celebrate and recognize the diversity and vitality of a community that has made remarkable achievements and valuable contributions. While there is much to celebrate this month, it is also important to use this time to recognize the hardships that the AANHPI community has overcome. For me, it was my own family’s experience being sent to an internment camp during World War II that shaped my path to public service. More than 120,000 Japanese Americans were forcibly removed and stripped of their property, land, businesses, and human dignity. My family was housed in a stable at the fairgrounds and then transported by train to the prison in Minidoka, Idaho. Since then, my grandfather has made it his personal mission to raise widespread awareness of this chapter in American history. Growing up knowing my…

Tyreke McIver ITA Public Affairs Director June is Pride Month in America! This annual event celebrates the vitality and progress made by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI+) people throughout history. It is also an important opportunity to honor their sacrifices and reaffirm our support for the LGBTQI+ community and allies to create a more equal, inclusive and tolerant world together. June is significant in American LGBTQI+ history for many reasons. The roots of the modern LGBTQ rights movement in the United States are rooted in the historic Stonewall Uprising in New York City on June 28, 1969, when patrons stood up for fair and equal treatment in the face of discrimination. It was a watershed moment that changed the public conversation about equality in the United States and paved the way for the LGBTQI+ rights movement. On June 26, 2015, some 46 years later, the U.S. Supreme Court enshrined marriage equality into federal law in Obergefell v.…

Celebrating Juneteenth | Tradeology, an ITA blog

Herrick Ross is ITA's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility and Employee Engagement Officer. On Juneteenth, communities across the United States will come together to celebrate Juneteenth National Independence DayJuneteenth marks the historic day in 1865 when Union troops marched into Galveston, Texas, and freed the last enslaved Black Americans. As we celebrate the anniversary of the end of slavery and those who fought for American freedom, Juneteenth also offers an opportunity for all of us to recommit to continuing the fight for freedom, opportunity, and liberation for all Americans. People often ask me why we celebrate Juneteenth. A common misconception is that Juneteenth is only a holiday for African Americans. When I hear this, I think of the words of abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who asked others the same question: “What is the Fourth of July to American slaves?” Regardless of race, culture or background, It is meaningful for every American to celebrate this holidayAs human beings, we can acknowledge our…

Celebrating 60th Anniversary of Goldfinger with Aston

james bond movies The series officially began with 1962's Dr. No. By 1964, it had hit several major milestones. That year, Goldfinger was released, a film that's a regular on lists of the best James Bond films of all time. Not only did it feature a unique henchman (Oddjob), a wealthy villain with an iconic name (Auric Goldfinger), and an over-the-top plot (irradiating the gold at Fort Knox to multiply the value of Goldfinger's stock), but it also featured the first true "Bond car." Yes, 007 drove different cars in the first two films, but none of them had the looks of an Aston Martin DB5, or—most importantly—the gadgets (unless you count the car phone in Bond's Bentley in From Russia With Love). This year is 60.day This year marks the 100th anniversary of the release of Goldfinger. To mark the occasion, Aston Martin has opened a 007-style pop-up store in London.
