The annual show attracts attendees from more than 60 countries, 1,000 hours of programming and more than 400 exhibitors Los Angeles (July 22, 2024) – Anime Expo celebrates its 33rd anniversary at the Los Angeles Convention Center, bringing together fans and industry professionals from around the world for North America’s largest celebration of Japanese pop culture. It’s a time to celebrate and recognize the diversity and vitality of a community that has made remarkable achievements and valuable contributions. While there is much to celebrate this month, it is also important to use this time to recognize the hardships that the AANHPI community has overcome. For me, it was my own family’s experience being sent to an internment camp during World War II that shaped my path to public service. More than 120,000 Japanese Americans were forcibly removed and stripped of their property, land, businesses, and human dignity. My family was housed in a stable at the fairgrounds and then transported by train to the prison in Minidoka, Idaho. The roots of the modern LGBTQ rights movement in the United States are rooted in the historic Stonewall Uprising in New York City on June 28, 1969, when patrons stood up for fair and equal treatment in the face of discrimination. It was a watershed moment that changed the public conversation about equality in the United States and paved the way for the LGBTQI+ rights movement.
