Lucid CEO agrees with Musk that America doesn’t need cheap cars
Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson says the market for cheap electric cars is terrible. He believes other carriers should license its technology rather than build low-cost Lucid. Other brands may already be planning to launch affordable electric cars with or without Lucid. Tesla and Elon Musk have long promised to launch a $25,000 electric car. CEO Update: November 2024
Dear colleagues and dear members: Brands elicit emotions. We get used to how things look and value familiarity. At the same time, the world is changing and brands need to change with it. If you don't want to be left behind, it's "running in circles." This UFI message looks a little different. We're doing this as we update and refresh UFI's logo and look. In the centenary of our association’s founding, this visual update will lead UFI through the next decade. It reaffirms our global identity and updates our look and feel for today's digitally-focused communication era, incorporating live events, meetings and experiences. In fact, UFI stopped using logos very early on. The first one was launched in 1947. It shows an image of Hermes, the Greek god of trade, wearing his iconic winged helmet. Around that image, text read: "UFI - Union Internationale des Exhibitions." If you look in a history book, you'll see that this logo has been…

Jim Farley admitted in an interview with Full Charged podcast host Robert Llewellyn that he often rides…

Stellantis dealers angry at CEO Tavares
The National Dealer Council sent a scathing open letter to Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares. The letter criticized Tavares for "reckless short-term decision-making" that led to the "disaster." Strantis responded that "public personal attacks" were not the way to solve the problem. It seems like Stellantis has been keeping itself busy lately. Its U.S. dealer network is under fire, holding CEO Carlos Tavares accountable for the rapid decline of the automaker's brand. And it's not just complaints -- they've sent an open letter asking him to allocate more funds to clear out old inventory and reinvigorate their American brand. Ford CEO calls Dark Horse a sub-brand, possibly hinting at the future
Ford CEO Jim Farley recently described Dark Horse as a sub-brand similar to Raptor and Tremor. This suggests that more "dark horse" variants may emerge. Currently, the Dark Horse collection includes a coupe that costs $68,275 and a race car that costs $145,000. Ryder CEO: Electric vehicle technology needs an inflection point to work
May 23, 2024 For Ryder System CEO Robert Sanchez to double down on electric vehicles, there needs to be a catalyst that makes the technology more economical and operational in the commercial trucking industry. During his keynote at this year’s ACT Expo in Las Vegas, Sanchez was outspoken about how he sees electric trucks fitting into his fleet. “From our perspective, for commercial electric vehicles to work in the real world, we need breakthroughs in battery technology and expanded charging infrastructure. We need an inflection point, a credible technological breakthrough that drives mass adoption of new technologies,” Sanchez said, citing the evolution of the cell phone industry since 1984 and the launch of the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X as an example. “It weighed two and a half pounds, provided 30 minutes of talk time on a single charge, and took 10 hours to fully charge. The price of this breakthrough was $12,000 in today’s currency.” Fast forward to today, technology has…

CEO Update: June 2024 Edition
Dear colleagues and members, In recent weeks, at various industry events, I have had many conversations with UFI members from around the world, as well as colleagues from other event industry sectors. In many cases, we ended up discussing expectations of UFI and other industry associations. Specifically, questions around what members (whether businesses or individuals) expect to get in return for their membership fees. What is the "deal", what are the expectations, and how can associations deliver on those expectations? Essentially – and this is what we come to in many of these conversations – successful associations have moved from a transactional relationship between members and industry bodies to becoming the home or host of industry communities. This is a particular focus for our industry as events are meant to bring people together. While many businesses benefit from the information, data, research, educational services and branding that associations provide, the more successful associations grow faster because they benefit from active…

Colleagues use Deepfake to discover Ferrari CEO impersonator
The executive was smart, and to confirm his identity, he asked a personal question Earlier this month, a Ferrari executive was the target of a deepfake scam. The scammer used artificial intelligence software to impersonate Ferrari's CEO on the phone, asking for help with the deal. Fortunately, the executive didn’t fall for it, and the scammer quickly hung up the phone. The rapid rise of artificial intelligence has given scammers new tools to deceive victims—even those in high positions. A recent deepfake scam targeted a Ferrari executive who received several messages and calls purportedly from the company’s CEO, Benedetto Vigna. Fortunately, the unnamed executive was able to outwit the imposter by asking a personal question as a means of identification. It all started with a string of messages on WhatsApp. Someone posing as Ferrari’s CEO asked for help with an urgent and supposedly confidential acquisition. The messages came from different phone numbers, but the profile photo showed Vigna standing in…
