About 1,200 Cruise vehicles were recalled due to a software issue that caused braking problems. August 23, 2024 — Approximately 1,200 Cruise Automated Driving System (ADS) units equipped with software versions released before May 14, 2024 will be recalled. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched an investigation into Cruise in December 2022 after receiving reports of problems with the Autopilot system. Cruise self-driving cars can automatically brake without warning, or simply stop moving. The issue is caused by software and can cause the vehicle to brake unexpectedly when a vehicle or cyclist approaches from behind. All Cruise vehicles will have their software updated before returning to the road. Cruise's recall number is 24-01.
