CarShield sued for counterfeit goods, eventually awarded $10 million

FTC says CarShield reviews were misleading, settles lawsuit for $10 million August 26, 2024 — The U.S. government settled a lawsuit for $10 million after accusing the auto warranty company CarShield of using fake reviews and ads to sell its car protection plans. According to the Federal Trade Commission's lawsuit against CarShield, CarShield and American Auto Shield used misleading reviews and celebrity endorsements to sell auto service contracts. In advertisements and telemarketing for these auto warranty service contracts, CarShield promised consumers “peace of mind” and “protection” and claimed that “you won’t be stuck with high repair bills again” and “you’ll never pay for expensive auto repairs again.” CarShield, based in Missouri, advertises warranty service contracts administered by Lakewood, Colorado-based American Auto Shield. CarShield sells its plans through telemarketers who answer incoming calls and make outbound calls in response to consumers, including those who make inquiries through the website.
