Georgia ports receive $120 million in federal grant

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) has received more than $120 million in federal grants to enhance operational sustainability and infrastructure at its Savannah and Brunswick facilities. The grants fund projects designed to enhance energy resiliency, reduce emissions and expand rail capacity, making Georgia Ports a leader in sustainable port operations. The project, which includes GPA-owned generators and substations, is designed to ensure uninterrupted power supply, especially during natural disasters for temperature-controlled goods such as food and medicines. GPA President and CEO Griff Lynch emphasized that reliable power is critical to the Authority’s continued transition from diesel to electric yard equipment. Courtesy of Phoenix Moore of the Professional Fishing League of America Erie, Pennsylvania—The Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development announced that the Erie Sports Commission was awarded a $45,000 Sports Marketing and Tourism Initiative (SMAT) grant to help offset the costs of hosting the Major League Fishing (MLF). In August 2024, 24 professional anglers from around the world traveled to Erie to compete in the Professional Fishing League General Tire Team Series B&W Trailer Hitch Challenge Cup presented by Toyota. The event lasted for six days and was broadcast live for more than 40 hours. In January, more videos will air every Saturday afternoon on the Outdoor Channel in a six-part series with each episode lasting two hours, totaling 72 hours of additional video. The purpose of the SMAT program is to help attract amateur and professional sporting events to Pennsylvania, with the goal of capitalizing on the influx of tourism that often comes with hosting major events. Oakland receives $3 million in climate adaptation grant

The Port of Oakland, in partnership with the City of Oakland, has been awarded a $3 million grant from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) for Sustainable Transportation Planning and Climate Adaptation. The grant is designed to address potential flooding issues caused by sea level rise (SLR) and groundwater intrusion (GWI). Director of Environmental Programs and Planning Colleen Liang emphasized the importance of the funding: “Sea level rise and groundwater intrusion pose an existential threat to the Port and the City. We are grateful to Caltrans for this award. We will use this funding to support adaptation strategies for vulnerable populations at the Port and in the City of Oakland.” The plan, titled "Sea Level Rise and Oakland's Infrastructure and Frontline Communities: Climate Adaptation Planning for Community-Led Resilience Projects," includes conducting an asset inventory and vulnerability assessment.
