On Juneteenth, communities across the United States will come together to celebrate Juneteenth National Independence DayJuneteenth marks the historic day in 1865 when Union troops marched into Galveston, Texas, and freed the last enslaved Black Americans. As we celebrate the anniversary of the end of slavery and those who fought for American freedom, Juneteenth also offers an opportunity for all of us to recommit to continuing the fight for freedom, opportunity, and liberation for all Americans. People often ask me why we celebrate Juneteenth. A common misconception is that Juneteenth is only a holiday for African Americans.
