New data shows more new cars are more fuel-intensive and dirtier
The latest round of real-world fuel and emissions testing by the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) has thrown more vehicles into the spotlight, with all but one of the latest vehicles tested falling short of their claimed requirements. In 2022, the federal government allocated $14 million to the AAA (the peak body of Australia's state-level car clubs such as the NRMA, RACV and RACQ) to conduct real-world testing of 200 vehicles that had previously been tested only under laboratory conditions. AAA has now published the results of the 70 cars it tested, with a total of 11 of the 12 cars in the fifth round of testing exceeding their fuel consumption (litres per 100km) requirements. Only the MG HS manages to beat its claimed fuel consumption, with 8.8L/100km in real-world testing and 9.5L/100km in lab testing. Hundreds of new car deals available via car expert Now.
