1934 Bugatti wins Pebble Beach “Best of Show” award
Monterey Car Week 2024 On Sunday, its signature event, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, came to a close. This year’s event drew 214 cars and their owners from 16 countries and 29 states to the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links to compete for dozens of awards. This was the tenth time since the event first took place in 1950 that the top prize, Best of Show, was awarded to Bugatti (tied with Mercedes-Benz for the most Best of Show wins). But the 1934 Type 59 sports car that owner Fritz Burkard drove to victory amid a shower of yellow and white confetti was different from the other winners. Image credit: Bugatti For the first time, this year's top exhibit came from one of the event's two preservation categories: L-1: Pre-War Preservation and L-2: Post-War Preservation. A 1934 Bugatti Type 59 Sport from the Pearl Collection in Zug, Switzerland, won first place in its individual category, beating out a…
Acura EV to debut in Monterey in 2024
Since its establishment in 1986, The Acura brand has always been about “crafted performance,” and with the recent release of two new concept cars, that dominant theme has come into sharp focus. Acura has been a focal point of Monterey's Car Week festivities for years, and this year was no exception. The golf club at Carmel Valley Ranch provided a picturesque backdrop for the unveiling of a concept car that will take Honda's performance division a step further in the competitive "electric arena." It's called the Performance EV Concept, and it's expected to go into production by the end of 2025. The only electric Acura model currently available is the ZDX. Under the hood, the ZDX rides on the same GM Ultium EV platform as the Cadillac Lyriq. Utilizing the Ultium platform in the short term gives Acura time to design a dedicated electric platform in-house, which is the model we're previewing today. Here's the story of how the production…
Lamborghini Temerario, Huracan successor, leaked ahead of release
Images of the Lamborghini Temerario, the much-anticipated successor to the Huracan, have leaked online ahead of its official debut at Monterey Car Week on the evening of August 16. The leaked images offer a first glimpse of the supercar's front end, with a bold design that's a significant departure from its V12-powered predecessor. Unlike the Huracan's naturally aspirated V10, the Temerario will feature a hybrid powertrain consisting of a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine and three electric motors. This configuration is part of Lamborghini's ambitious electrification strategy to make its entire lineup hybrid or electrified. Once launched, the Huracan's successor will join the Revuelto and Urus SE as the third plug-in hybrid supercar in Lamborghini's lineup. Lamborghini Temerario: Design The Temerario features a sharply angular design that contrasts with the more complex lines of its larger sibling, the Revuelto. Unlike the Ypsilon's aesthetic, the Temerario introduces a unique hexagonal pattern throughout the body. Its low front end features sleek twin-barrel projector…

MINI to Monterey: Day 5
MINI agreed to lend it to me A 2025 Cooper S so I can put in 3,100 miles to cover the events of Monterey Car Week. Follow the entire series here. So I decided to limit my trip for the day so it would be easier to stop at things to see along the way rather than just driving a few miles on Interstate 80. I had no real plan, but it turned out there was a lot to do and some fun photo opportunities. After leaving Salt Lake City, Utah, I took a detour to the Bonneville Salt Flats, where the fastest men on earth hope to set records. The Bonneville track is home to almost every famous racer in the world. This place is definitely haunted and has a really cool vibe. There was some testing going on at the time, but the officials were kind enough to let me stop by the sign for a cool photo.…
From MINI to Monterrey: Day 4
MINI agreed to lend it to me A 2025 Cooper S so I can put in 3,100 miles to cover the events of Monterey Car Week. Follow the entire series here. The distance from Lincoln, Nebraska to Salt Lake City, Utah is 876 miles. According to the onboard navigation, it takes a total of 12 hours and 18 minutes before stopping. It's a long day, but the new 2025 MINI Cooper S handles it with ease. This is largely thanks to the truly excellent driver assistance options on the car. As long as you keep your hands on the wheel, it does a great job of keeping in lane, the adaptive cruise control doesn't follow too close or too far, and adjusts speed just as if I were operating it manually. Did I mention that on top of that, the new MINI averaged 77 mph and got an amazing 42 mpg?!? Today I was on Interstate 80 in Nebraska and…
From MINI to Monterrey: Day 3
MINI agreed to lend it to me A 2025 Cooper S so I can put in 3,100 miles to cover the events of Monterey Car Week. Follow the entire series here. The photo says it all. I spent most of today in the middle of nowhere in Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska. At the end of the day, I saw a large convenience store in Lincoln, Nebraska, and the sign that read "You're Not Going Anywhere" perfectly summed up my day's driving and most of the places I passed. Reflection of truck I started at 6am and basically spent the entire day on I-80, just driving a few miles and stopping at rest areas occasionally. Afterwards, I went to a truck stop and had lunch at Arby's. The staff was very friendly and the food was great. I was looking forward to reaching Omaha, Nebraska, where I would meet up with my best friend Trent Abbott at his garage and…
Rolls-Royce unveils one-of-a-kind California-inspired Ghost
Rolls-Royce has unveiled the Spectre Semaphore, a one-of-a-kind special creation that will make its public debut at the 2024 Monterey Car Week in California on August 16. As is customary with Rolls-Royce, buyers can personalize their models with a wide range of options, and the latest is no exception. It's a limited edition electric car that features a unique hood spray and custom paint. The Bespoke Semaphore Yellow color of the body is what gives the car its name. But the "marbled" hood is the most eye-catching feature. The company calls the artwork "an abstract tribute to the Golden State and its diverse surroundings," inspired by the "informal elegance of California's coastal regions." According to the British manufacturer, this custom design based on the all-electric Spectre shows how the brand's younger, bolder customer base is changing the way they think about luxury. MINI to Monterrey: Day 1 and Day 2
MINI agreed to lend it to me A 2025 Cooper S so I can put 3,100 miles on it and cover the events of Monterey Car Week. Click here to read part one of this series. Sorry for not posting about Day 1. The drive to Scranton, PA was boring and there were no detours. The photo below was taken when I arrived at the Fairfield Inn, where I seem to stay at least once a year. The next morning started at 6am with a quick breakfast waffle and a Diet Coke before setting off for South Bend, Indiana. The ride started out uneventful, but I was glad to have the adaptive cruise control and lane assist, which seemed to make the miles fly by on I- 80. Both worked extremely well and definitely helped ease traffic on the interstate. After refueling, I quickly called my friend Brandon Anderson, executive director and CEO of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum.…
Honda to bring 1984 HP-X concept car to Pebble Beach
Probably You've probably never seen the 1984 Honda HP-X concept car before. You've probably never even seen Hear That's okay. We understand. It was unveiled at the 1984 Turin Motor Show but hasn't been seen in public for 40 years. That streak ends on Sunday, August 18, when it makes its North American debut at the 73rd annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance during Monterey Car Week in 2024. With its wedge-shaped Pininfarina design, it's sure to turn a lot of heads, but it's more than just looks. It's an important page in Honda and Acura history. We’re so used to concept cars that it’s easy to think they’ve always been around. In the 1980s, concept cars were new to Honda. In fact, the HP-X (Honda Pininfarina eXperimental) was Honda’s first concept car. Pininfarina’s designers certainly knew what a concept car should look like. They gave it an aggressive fighter jet-style removable one-piece Perspex canopy. Not only was this the highlight…

Driving the 2025 MINI Cooper S 3,100 miles to Monterey
No, I'm not crazy. I’m heading to Monterey Car Week in the all-new 2025 MINI Cooper S. I was given the opportunity, and since I’ve driven to Monterey a dozen times over the years, I figured why not? Sixth Monterey Road Trip Second Monterey Road Trip I'm sure this will be the most relaxing road trip to Monterey, as every car I drive to the event is at least 25 years old. This includes a 1973 Ferrari Daytona, a 1966 Volvo 1800S, a 1968 Fiat 124 Spider, a 1986 Alfa Romeo GTV6, a Bentley Turbo, an Aston Martin DB7, and most recently, a 1984 Porsche 944. With this list of cars, you can understand why I'm not nervous about driving this year. What I'm really looking forward to is good air conditioning, comfortable seats, incredible fuel efficiency, and most importantly, no worries of getting stranded in the middle of Nevada if the car breaks down. The new 2025 MINI Cooper…
1955 Ferrari 410 S with Carroll Shelby winning the championship
Before he founded Shelby American In the early 1960s, Carroll Shelby was racing around the world in cars from other manufacturers, not just American ones. In 1959, he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans together with Roy Salvadori, driving the Aston Martin DBR1. He also drove several Ferraris in the 1950s, including two of the four 410 S cars developed to compete in the Carrera Panamericana before it was cancelled in 1955. Two of the Ferraris Shelby drove were sold to private individuals. The other two remained with Ferrari's own factory team. One of the two privately owned cars, chassis number 0598 CM, was sold at auction in 2022 for $22 million. It was also driven by Juan Manuel Fangio and Phil Hill, among others. 1955 Ferrari 410 S bearing chassis no. 0592 CM – Photo courtesy of RM Sotheby's Now, another 410 S driven by Shelby (chassis #0592 CM) is set to go under the hammer at RM…
