This motorcycle relaunched the BMW Motorrad brand in the early 1970s and in many ways saved the BMW Motorrad division. In 1976, the R 90 S took the world by storm when it won the Production TT race on the Isle of Man, with drivers Hans-Otto Butenuth and Helmut Dähne celebrating their class victory. In the same year, Steve McLaughlin (83rd) won the famous Daytona 200 race on a Butler & Smith-prepared R 90 S; his teammate Reg Pridmore (163rd) later became the first AMA Superbike Champion in history.
