China-backed Chankai Grand Port prepares to redefine South
Peru's new Port of Chancay is a massive Chinese-backed infrastructure project that will serve as a trade hub between South America and Asia. The port, operated by Hong Kong-based Cosco Shipping Group, will begin limited operations next month and gradually expand to facilitate regular trans-Pacific cargo movements. Trial launch of direct route to Shanghai Carlos Tejada, general manager of COSCO Shipping Chancay Peru, announced that the port will launch a "test adjustment" phase at the end of November that will last until May. During this phase, Chankai will begin handling actual cargo using two direct container ships to Shanghai each week. "While this is just the beginning, Chancay's potential will expand based on demand, possibly adding other Asian markets to its routes," Tejada told a Peru-China business forum.
