Southwest Airlines is packing and announced Tuesday that it will start charging some customers for check bags, ending a unique free policy that makes it even more outlier in the airline industry. These changes mark another departure from Texas airlines’ passenger-friendly policy. Last year, Southwest announced plans to end open seating, which has been at the heart of its brand image for more than 50 years. Starting May 28, the airline will begin charging first and second shipped bags; however, its quick rewards to A-list members of a preferred loyalty program or business fare trip will be exempt from fees. The airline will offer a free check bag to lower the identity of A-list members.
