In this talk, we’ll summarize our field research into how families with young children are coping with distance, and how the technology they use is both helpful and inadequate. We’ll use the findings from this fieldwork to drive a multi-year quest to enable families to read books together at a distance. We’ll outline the design and evaluation of 3 research prototypes: Family Storytime (mobile device + physical book), Story Access (web), and People in Books (depth camera).
