Study Suggests Heavy Dependence On Cars Makes You Unhappy
Study shows heavy reliance on your car can make you unhappy

Having to use a car for at least 50% of your trip may not sit well with you One study found that heavy reliance on a car can lead to lower life satisfaction. The tipping point is around 50%, but car use increases satisfaction at lower levels. The researchers say the findings should encourage planners and policymakers to help reduce reliance on vehicles. The United States is a large, diverse country made up of small towns, large cities, and rural farms. Depending on where you live, how much you rely on your car can vary greatly. While city dwellers can quickly leave their apartment and walk to a nearby store, people living outside of metropolitan areas may be miles away from the nearest gas station or grocery store. This could affect your quality of life, as a new study finds that those who rely heavily on their cars are less satisfied. More: Teens not interested in driving? they are not…

The study surveyed more than 23,000 electric vehicle drivers from 18 different countries. Only 1% of respondents said they would return to pure internal combustion engine vehicles Most people prefer this platform because of its lower operating costs, but many have issues with fees. EV adoption rates have sometimes fluctuated wildly. Loyalty no longer changes much after owning an electric car. Overconfident men pose road safety risks, study finds
Overconfident men pose road safety risks, study finds

Overconfident men pose a significant risk on Australian roads, with an overwhelming majority believing their driving is above average, a new national survey has revealed. The survey, commissioned by Continental Tires and conducted by Pureprofile, asked Australian men to rate their driving abilities. A total of 77% of the 3,005 men surveyed said their driving skills were above average, 22% said they were average, and only 1% admitted they were poor drivers. Mitchell Golledge, managing director of Continental Tires, said it was important to remain confident when driving but "overconfidence can be dangerous". "Our research shows that many Australian men rate themselves as 'above average' drivers, yet we are still seeing negative road safety statistics," he said. "We would like to remind all drivers to assess their real-world skills, check their tires and take care of road safety to protect themselves and others, especially in the run-up to Christmas." New study calls BYD a human rights villain
New study calls BYD a human rights villain

BYD has been named and shamed in a study into human rights abuses in its automotive supply chain. Amnesty International's Rights Recharge report also claims Mitsubishi and Hyundai could do more to protect indirect workers. BYD declined to disclose the source of its cobalt, with Mercedes being the most transparent. BYD makes more electric cars than anyone else, and does so at a lower cost than most Western automakers can fathom. But there's a price, and it's being paid by workers in the supply chain, according to a new report investigating human rights risks in the electric vehicle industry. var adpushup = window.adpushup = window.adpushup || {que:()}; adpushup.que.push(function() { if (adpushup.config.platform !== "DESKTOP") { adpushup.triggerAd("4d84e4c9 -9937-4f84-82c0-c94544ee6f2a"); } else{ adpushup.triggerAd("6a782b01-facb-45f3-a88f-ddf1b1f97657"); Amnesty International's Rights Recharge study ranks 13 car manufacturers based on how they address human rights risks in their mineral supply chains. Modern Volvo 240 Design Study Proves Boxy Can Be Sexy Again
Hyundai Volvo 240 design study proves boxy can be sexy again

This bold independent study draws inspiration from the brand's roots to chart an alternative path for Volvo's mid-size sedans and estates November 9, 2024 13:40 The Volvo 240 of the 1980s inspired an independent design study for an all-electric car. Jordan Rubinstein-Towler modernized the classic model's boxy styling in both sedan and wagon models. In another universe, these electric cars could serve as successors to the discontinued S60/V60. Synonymous with safety and Scandinavian design, Volvo has long balanced practicality with understated style — a tradition that may carry over to its upcoming electric ES90 flagship, which is set to debut in March 2025. Continue on the car. But when seen through a bold retro lens? independent designer Jordan Rubinstein-Toler He himself provides a thought-provoking answer to this hypothetical question using his fictional 2026 Volvo 240 concept car. This redesigned version is a modern nod to the brand's iconic boxy past, while seamlessly blending cutting-edge technology and premium design elements to…

Return to study at MPI Academy

Ronnie Winter Behind every successful planner is a foundation of continuing professional development, says Tim Luepke, president of the Institute of Meeting Professionals International (MPI). The role of planners is changing, like a race car racing around a track. Technological updates, advanced data analytics, neurodivergent conferencing and artificial intelligence are entering the field, keeping planners on their toes. Lupke said keeping up with the changes is almost a full-time job in itself. The MPI Academy exists to assist planners on their professional development journey. He explained that the primary purpose of MPI is to serve the continuing education needs of community members. “Our certificate program leverages the insights we gain from strategic partners to educate industry and help planners do their jobs better,” he said. “But things are changing so fast that we have to update content every time we deliver it, especially AI,” he said. “The fast pace of change in the industry requires us to quickly adapt and…

Case Study: Healthcare Advocates Summit highlights wellness

Listen to audio Last minute added wellness classes make all the difference While traveling between meetings during an event, it’s easy for attendees to lose sight of themselves: not paying attention to what they’re eating, how active they are, or just not paying attention to whether they need a break. Melissa Paige, co-CEO of Healthcare Advocates Summit, realizes this. When she brought the annual event to Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, she decided to take action. Page was three months away from her event when she decided to add options from Caesars Entertainment's healthy menu to her event. She would hardly have added this had she not attended the Kaiser Health Forum (formerly the Wellness Summit). "We had to stop and think about if we were actually going to the health (forum) and if we had the time. At the end of the day, we need to make time for it," Page said. "We know nothing about health. We don't…

Artificial intelligence to save us: New study shows ChatGPT can change

Recent research from MIT Sloan and American University reveals a surprising ally in the fight against conspiracy theories: artificial intelligence. A study led by professors David Lander, Thomas Costello, and Gordon Pennycook shows that AI conversations can effectively reduce people’s belief in conspiracy theories — and that the effects last for at least two months. Also read: 9 counterintuitive trends in artificial intelligence In their paper, “Sustained Reduction of Conspiracy Beliefs through Conversation with AI,” published in the journal Science, researchers show that large language models like GPT-4 Turbo can engage conspiracy theorists in personalized, evidence-based conversations to challenge and refute their beliefs. This technology offers a potentially powerful tool to combat misinformation in a way that human conversations typically can’t. Testing conspiracy beliefs about AI The study invited more than 2,000 conspiracy theorists and asked them to explain their beliefs and evidence in their own words. GPT-4 Turbo was then used to develop customized arguments to address these specific…

Case Study: Loews Atlanta Hotel Overcoming Challenges

Listen to Audio When crises strike host cities and hotels for meeting professionals, it’s reassuring to know that despite the uncertainty of the unexpected, the hotel where your event is held is well prepared to meet the challenge. That's what happened at the Loews Atlanta Hotel, where a water main break occurred in downtown Atlanta a few days before the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) conference, and then affected another water main in downtown Atlanta a few days before the conference. Responding to emergencies The break caused water outages and boil advisories at venues, hotels and businesses throughout the city. Fortunately, Loews Atlanta’s water supply was never shut off or reduced because it is miles away from the main break. But even before the warning was issued, the Loews Atlanta team began working. Executive Chef Olivier instructed his team to fill large sterilized cooking containers with clean water and keep them in the kitchen refrigerator; the team boiled the water continuously…

Singer Turbo Study 911 gets slanted nose design
Singer Turbo Study 911 gets slanted nose design

California singer revealed Based on a slanted-nose version of the 964-generation Porsche 911 Turbo Study, it applies its typical attention to detail to this iconic design. Debuting in coupe form in 2022, the Turbo Study follows Singer's template of taking a 964-generation 911 chassis and tracing its exterior. In this case, the design was inspired by the earlier Porsche 930, the original 911 Turbo built from 1975 to 1989. Singer offers the Turbo Study in Targa and convertible versions in addition to the coupe, and now has added the option of a slant-nose coupe. Also known as the "Flachbau" or "Flatnose," the slant-nose design replaces the fixed headlights with pop-up headlights, creating a low-profile front end inspired by the Porsche 935 race car. It was originally offered as a special order option for the 930 and is now very rare. Like the other Turbo Study models, the snub-nosed cars started out as customer-supplied 964 chassis. They were fully restored and…

Case Study: Edgefactory Launches Holiday-Themed Event in California

Listen to Audio When more than 1,200 Quest Software employees descended on the Anaheim, California Hilton for the company’s annual financial close celebration, NXT FY25, the venue looked more like something built for a music festival. So it’s no surprise that some attendees wondered if they were in the right place. Luckily, edgefactory’s creative branding made sure they knew where they were. Quest organizers wanted their event to be like the SXSW music and film festival held annually in Austin, Texas. They created an event that rivals the SXSW music and film festival. Defining themes “(Quest) really broke the mold,” said Brian Cole, president and CEO of edgefactory. “They didn’t want to play it safe. They wanted to make a statement. We had a huge challenge because last year at Virgin Las Vegas (Quest’s NXT FY24) was all sports-themed. It was probably one of the coolest events we’ve ever done. So we had to raise the bar, and we didn’t…

Ciena study explores impact of artificial intelligence on networks

Ciena recently released a global study on the growing optimism among communications service providers (CSPs) about artificial intelligence (AI). The study, conducted in partnership with Censuswide, surveyed more than 1,500 CSP engineers and managers in 17 countries around the world. A key theme of the study is that AI will improve network performance. More than half (60%) of respondents believe AI can improve network efficiency by 40% or more, and 85% expressed confidence in CSPs’ ability to monetize AI traffic through the network. Additionally, CSPs believe AI will require upgrades to optical network infrastructure, switches, routers, and 800G technology. More information
