Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) has unveiled a unique Volkswagen pickup truck concept that is a blend of the Taigun (SUV) and the Virtus (Sedan). The pickup truck is a part of the company's student car project for 2024 under the Skill India initiative. It was developed by a group of mechatronics students in nine months. For those who don't know, last year's student car project was the Skoda Rapid convertible. About the recently unveiled pickup truck, SAVWIPL said: “The project was developed in multiple phases, from finalizing the vehicle concept to idea gathering, market analysis, R&D, sourcing, packaging and final vehicle testing." It added that the students fabricated and 3D printed many of the components, demonstrating their skills in applying innovative manufacturing techniques to solve design challenges. Volkswagen India has achieved a major milestone with the Taigun SUV, having sold 1 lakh units since its launch three years ago. Domestic sales stood at 67,140 units and exports at 32,742 units, taking total sales to 99,882 units by the end of August, according to SIAM data. With the first shipments in September, the automaker has officially crossed the 1 lakh mark. The SUV achieved its highest domestic sales in the fiscal ending March 2023, with 21,736 units sold. However, shipments have declined slightly since then. On the export front, the Taigun peaked in FY2024 with 12,621 units shipped.
