Tesla Model S owner Carl Hunter said he was looking down at his phone when he hit Neeson. September 5, 2024 — Federal safety investigators will look into a Tesla crash in Washington state after a Tesla Model S rear-ended and killed a motorcyclist about 15 miles from Seattle. Washington investigators downloaded information from Tesla's event data recorder and determined that the "Full Self-Driving" system was engaged at the time of the accident. On the afternoon of April 19, the Tesla car accident occurred on Highway 522 near Fells Road when the driver of the 2022 Tesla Model S, Carl S. Hunter (56 years old), looked down at his mobile phone.
