Tata Motors has just pulled off an impossible stunt with its new Curvv compact SUV. The stunt was called “Act One” and was likely the start of a series. In Act 01, Tata demonstrated the strength and performance of the Curvv Hyperion (Turbo GDI) 6-speed manual powertrain variant by pulling three trucks with a combined weight of 42,000 kg!
Tata Curvv towing 3 trucks (42,000 kg)
Looking back, Tata Motors is no stranger to showcasing its vehicle prowess. We have seen the Tata Hexagon towing a Boeing 737-800 aircraft. A quick Google search shows that the unladen weight of a Boeing 737-800 is 41,140 kilograms. So, a tough SUV based on a heavy-duty ladder frame chassis and powered by a 2.2L diesel engine is already impressive.
Now, Tata is demonstrating the Curvv’s chassis strength and integrity by pulling 42,000 kilograms. That’s probably even more impressive than the Hexa’s already impressive feat, considering this particular Curvv unit is based on a mainstream monocoque chassis and is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine, which isn’t exactly known for its torque Known for traction.
In a video posted by Tata Motors on its social media account, we can see a Curvv Hyperion (Turbo GDI) manual variant pulling three trucks with a total weight of 42,000 kg. Basically, it pulls more than the Hexa. This particular Tata Curvv features a custom rear hook that attaches to the heavy chain.
Apparently, this heavy-duty hitch is attached directly to the Curvv’s platform (skateboard) and is not part of the standard equipment. All three trucks are chained and hooked to this particular Curvv.
What purpose does this special ability achieve?
Through such stunts, Tata Motors showcases the strength and structural integrity of its vehicle’s foundation. This is a shining example of engineering where the FOS (factor of safety) is well above 1. In order for the FOS to equal 1, the Curvv must perform as advertised after towing its rated capacity, which is unlikely to exceed 2,000kg.
Additionally, the stunt showcased the performance of Tata’s new Hyperion engine. Normally, a gasoline engine would not be considered for such a stunt, as diesel engines have obvious torque and traction advantages. This 1.2L Hyperion GDI engine is capable of producing 125 PS of peak power and 225 Nm of peak torque and is paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox in this stunt.
Tata’s move No. 01 with Tata Curvv is likely to create a lot of positive association with the brand among buyers. Curvv showcases its muscle and engineering prowess and aims to boost its sales potential against established rivals from rival brands such as Hyundai, Kia and others.
