Tata Nexon iCNG model with twin-cylinder technology

Tata never stops innovating. Petrol, diesel and electric engines weren’t enough, and now it has confirmed the launch of a CNG engine for its best-selling compact SUV model ‘Nexon’. Recently, Tata showcased its upcoming iCNG model at the Bharat Mobility Show. The brand has not publicly announced any concrete information about the launch or additional specifications of this new model, which has kept people excited. So what can we actually expect from this new iCNG model? Here are some guesses.

Engine Updates: The existing Nexon model is equipped with a 1.2L turbocharged engine. It is expected that the iCNG model will also be equipped with the same engine. If true, the Tata Nexon iCNG model will be the first CNG car in India to be equipped with a turbocharged engine.

Twin Cylinder Technology: Tata Motors is the only brand in India to use dual CNG cylinder technology in its cars. Tata Tiago, Punch and Altrol all use dual CNG cylinders and Nexon iCNG is also expected to use dual CNG cylinders. Two small cylinders instead of one large cylinder saves more space and is more convenient.

Gearbox Update: The petrol and diesel models of the Tata Nexon come with 6-speed AMT and 5-speed MT options as they have turbocharged engines. If the new iCNG segment gets the same engine, it will also come with a 6-speed AMT option. If not, then it will come with a standard 5-speed manual gearbox like other CNG cars in the segment.

Fire extinguisher placement: Since it is a CNG vehicle, it will definitely be equipped with a fire extinguisher for safety reasons. The question is, where should the fire extinguisher be placed inside the cabin? Usually, it is placed in spaces that cause discomfort. However, Tata is known for its no-frills placement, so we can expect the fire extinguisher to be better positioned inside the car.

When is the release expected?

Tata Motors has confirmed that it will launch the new iCNG model by the end of this fiscal year. According to sources, the new Nexon is expected to be launched by the end of 2024. Moreover, Tata being Tata, it may launch the new Nexon even earlier, perhaps in the next few months. No one can predict.
