Tata Punch sales exceed 200,000 units in 2024, Maruti Wagon R second in sales
Maruti Suzuki’s dominance as India’s best-selling carmaker has been broken for the first time in four decades. Tata Motors’ subcompact SUV Tata Punch became India’s best-selling car in 2024, overtaking Maruti Suzuki’s Wagon R. Tata Motors’ Punch has sold more than 202,000 units, surpassing the Wagon R’s 191,000 units, marking a critical moment for the Indian car market.
This shift reflects broader trends in consumer preferences, with SUVs expected to occupy three of the top five positions in the Indian market by 2024.
The Rise of Tata Panch
Since its launch in 2021, the Tata Punch has steadily gained favor among Indian buyers. Positioned as a sub-compact SUV, it occupies a place in the sub-4 meter SUV segment with its bold design, 190mm ground clearance and commanding driving position. This segment is increasingly becoming the preferred choice for buyers transitioning from hatchbacks like the Maruti Swift.
By 2022, Punch’s monthly sales continued to exceed 10,000 units and soared in 2024, becoming India’s best-selling car. Despite stiff competition from Hyundai’s Exter, which has a similar feature set and price point, the Punch outperformed its rivals and more than doubled its sales in 2024.
Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Vehicles, attributes the success to the growing SUV market and growing demand for eco-friendly powertrains. He also highlighted the broader growth of the passenger vehicle (PV) market, which is expected to reach 4.3 million units by 2024.
Maruti Suzuki faces new challenges
Maruti Suzuki, synonymous with budget cars in India, finds itself at a crossroads as the market shifts towards SUVs and premium cars. While the company maintained a 52% market share in 2018, its share fell to 41% in 2024, reflecting the challenges it faces in adapting to changing consumer preferences.
The SUV segment lacks competitive offerings, especially in the premium segment above Rs. 10 lakhs, which has greatly impacted the dominance of Maruti Suzuki. The company’s Wagon R, which once had a top-five selling model, has declined in 2024, marking a historic shift in consumer sentiment.
Indian bestseller review
Historically, the Indian car market has been dominated by specific models. The ambassador of Hindustan Motors ruled India for almost three decades after independence before Maruti Suzuki revolutionized the market with the launch of the Maruti 800 in 1985. Alto has been India’s best-selling car for 13 consecutive years after the Maruti 800, setting a sales record of 311,000 units in 2011.
However, the market landscape has changed in recent years. Stricter regulations, such as the transition to BS VI emission norms and mandatory safety features like airbags, have changed consumer preferences. The dominance of hatchbacks has waned, giving way to the SUV craze.
Shifts in consumer preferences
The evolution of the Indian automobile market highlights a major shift in buyer behavior. Once considered an aspirational vehicle, SUVs have now become mainstream, offering a combination of style, space and practicality. The top five list for 2024 highlights this trend, with SUVs accounting for a large share of sales.
For Maruti Suzuki, the challenge is to expand its SUV portfolio and maintain its affordable heritage while catering to new consumer demands. Meanwhile, Tata Motors, buoyed by Punch’s success, is poised to capitalize on the momentum and further strengthen its position in the market.
As the Indian automobile industry reaches new heights with sales of 42.86 million units in 2024, this landmark year marks the dawn of a new era where innovation and adaptability will determine leaders in an increasingly competitive market .
