Tata sales fell year-on-year and month-on-month, with its market share falling to 11.4% in September 2024
Tata Motors, India’s fourth-largest selling carmaker after Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Mahindra, saw its sales in September 2024 fall sharply. While every model in the company’s portfolio recorded a decline in month-on-month (MoM) sales, except for the Curvv, year-on-year sales were mixed. Tata Motors has a healthy and diverse product lineup, including eight sedans and SUVs, five of which also offer electric versions.
Tata Sales September 2024 – Punching Leads
Tata’s sales in September 2024 were 41,065 units. Compared with 44,810 units sold in September 2023, this represents a year-on-year decrease of 8%. Compared with the 44,142 units sold in August 2024, month-on-month sales were also down 7%. The Tata Punch is the brand’s highest-selling model with 13,711 units sold last month. This is a 5% increase from the 13,036 units sold in September 2023. However, month-on-month sales were down 12% from the 15,643 units sold in August 2024.
The second position is occupied by Tata Nexon and its electric model (EV) with sales of 11,470 units. This was down 25% year-on-year and 7% month-on-month, as 15,325 units were sold in September 2023 and 12,298 units were sold in August 2024. The sales of Tata Nexon will now improve with the launch of new CNG models at affordable prices.
The relatively new entrant Tata Curvv/EV, which debuted in August 2024, has injected freshness into the company’s product portfolio, with sales of 4,763 units in the past month. Sales in August 2024 increased by more than 3,455 units. The Curvv marks Tata Motors’ first foray into the compact SUV segment and its sales figures illustrate its success in this segment.
Tata Tiago ranked fourth with sales of 4,225 units last month. Compared to the 6,789 units sold in September 2023, sales were down a double-digit 38% year-on-year. Month-on-month sales were also down 11% from the 4,733 units sold in August 2024. The sharp drop in demand has significantly reduced its market share. Tata Altroz sales also declined last month. Sales fell to 2,758 units, down 59% from the 6,684 units sold in September 2023. Quarter-on-quarter sales were down 9% from the 3,031 units sold in August 2024.
Tata Harrier and Safari Post sales increase year-on-year
Tata Safari sales reached 1,644 units in September 2024 and the demand is strong. Compared with the 516 units sold in September 2023, this represents a year-on-year increase of 219%. However, compared with 1,951 units sold in August 2024, its sales fell by 16% month-on-month. Tata Harrier sales have also increased by 73% year-on-year to 1,600 units in the past month, down from 926 units sold in September 2023. The month-on-month sales volume dropped again by 15% from the 1,892 units sold in August 2024. The Tata Harrier EV will also enter the segment with new visuals when tested in Jabalpur.
Tata Tigor/EV ranked last in the sales list with 894 units sold last month. Compared with the 1,534 units sold in September 2023, this represents a significant year-on-year decrease of 42%. Compared with the 1,148 units sold in August 2024, month-on-month sales were also down 22%.
Tata Motors has launched special discounts and offers for the festive season. Buyer discounts, exchange schemes and special corporate offers will range from Rs 10,000 to Rs 1.33 lakh till October 2024, depending on the model. These discounts only apply to the company’s ICE lineup and 2023 and 2024 model years.
