- The first fatal accident involving a Tesla Cybertruck has left a man dead.

The Tesla Cybertruck has passed another milestone, but it’s not cause for celebration. On Sunday evening, a Texas man became the first person to be killed in an accident involving the Angular EV.
News reports said an unnamed Cybertruck owner lost control of his electric pickup truck while driving near Beach City in Chambers County, Texas, on Sunday evening. It’s unclear why the truck veered off the road, hit a concrete culvert, and then caught fire. ABC13 report.

Post-fire images show a charred remains of the car, with the driver seemingly trapped in the flames. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene, but we don’t yet know if he died before the fire or before the impact, perhaps from a medical emergency. So far, emergency services have also refused to release the driver’s name.
The most discussed topic after the Tesla accident was whether the driver had Autopilot or Full Self-Driving enabled, but neither of these technologies are important because the Cybertruck does not currently support either technology. The Cybertruck does not have the automatic steering feature offered by other Tesla models, which means the closest thing the Cybertruck has to self-driving is the adaptive cruise control system.
Did the driver think it could steer, too, at the time of the accident? Or was there some kind of technical malfunction? In April, Tesla recalled thousands of Cybertrucks because the accelerator pedal was at risk of falling off and potentially interfering with the pedals.
Police investigators have not yet pointed to a possible cause of the accident and are still investigating. Tesla will undoubtedly also be working to determine why the Cybertruck veered off the road and then caught fire.
While this is the first fatal accident involving a Cybertruck, it is the first accident involving the electric vehicle so far. The first accident with the truck occurred in December 2023, when only a handful of electric vehicles were delivered to owners, and we reported on two Cybertruck rollover accidents last month alone.
