Tesla Cybertruck recalls for fifth time in a year, more than 27,000 vehicles affected
Tesla is recalling more than 27,000 Cybertrucks due to delays in rearview camera image activation, marking the vehicle’s fifth recall since its launch late last year. The recall stems from a software issue that prevents the rearview camera display from activating immediately when the vehicle is in reverse. Affected trucks may experience delays of up to 8 seconds before camera images appear, exceeding the 2 seconds required by U.S. law.
To address this issue, Tesla released a free software update. Owner notification letters are expected to be sent by November 25, 2024. Tesla customers affected by this recall can contact the company’s customer service at 1-877-798-3752 for further assistance or visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website.
The recall adds to growing problems for Tesla’s much-anticipated Cybertruck, which is set to begin delivery in November 2023, two years later than originally planned. Earlier recalls involved issues such as trim parts that could come off, front windshield wipers that failed and the accelerator pedal that could get stuck.
Tesla has been aggressive in addressing the issues with software updates and other measures, but the recall highlights the challenges the company faces in scaling production of its distinctive, angular electric trucks. So far, Tesla’s customer base has been enthusiastic about the Cybertruck’s future design and performance, although these recurring recalls may test the patience of some buyers.
The latest recall has been officially reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which requires rearview cameras in vehicles to meet strict timing standards to improve safety. While no major incidents were reported due to camera display delays, Tesla moved quickly to issue a recall and release the necessary software fixes.
Tesla’s Cybertruck, praised for its bold design and cutting-edge features, continues to attract both positive and critical attention as it navigates the complexities of mass production and vehicle safety compliance.
