Tesla Cybertruck Will Get Rock Sliders And Battery Pack Armor This Year
  • The two new accessories were confirmed by Cybertruck chief engineer Wes Morrill.
  • Pricing details have not yet been announced.
  • Rivian has given the R1T additional underbody protection as part of an off-road package.

The Tesla Cybertruck is about to get some welcome upgrades to make it better suited for navigating rough terrain, a capability that has been questioned several times since its launch.

Unlike the Rivian R1T, the Cybertruck currently has no optional underbody protection, which would keep the battery pack safe even if it hits rocks on a tough off-road trail. That will soon change, as Cybertruck chief engineer Wes Morrill revealed at X that the EV will soon have new “armor” for the battery pack and will be equipped with rock sliders.

Pickup truck owners absolutely love to add accessories to their vehicles, especially when they plan to go off-roading. Many automakers take full advantage of this by offering a large catalog of optional parts that encourage buyers to splurge. Tesla has done the same with the Cybertruck and offers a number of parts, including a truck-mounted tent, a tailgate ramp, crossbars, and a pair of folding seats that sit on the tailgate.

Morrill didn’t specify what materials the battery armor and rock sliders will be made of, but whatever they are, the parts probably won’t be cheap. Rivian’s off-road package for the R1T is expensive at $3,950, but in addition to reinforced underbody guards, it also comes with 20-inch all-terrain tires, a full-size spare tire, and a built-in air compressor.

Perhaps the Cybertruck’s most important addition is the long-promised extended-range battery. Taking up about a third of the EV’s cabin capacity, the battery is said to increase the range of the standard dual-motor model from 318 miles (512 km) to 470 miles (756 km), while the CyberBeast’s range will increase from 301 miles (484 km) to 440 miles (708 km). The battery pack has limited specifications, but the available storage will likely be around 47 kWh and will cost buyers $16,000.
