According to police, they followed the car for more than a mile while the driver slept before pulling it over
- Police say a 25-year-old man fell asleep in the Tesla Model 3 he was driving before he was pulled over.
- After officers made contact with him, they found several bottles of drugs in the vehicle.
- He now faces a raft of serious charges in connection with the incident.
Falling asleep at the wheel can quickly lead to death. In the case of a young man in South Carolina, a Tesla Model 3 in semi-autonomous mode saved his life while he was asleep. When he woke up, he must have been surprised to see several police officers pulling over his car. Now, he faces several serious charges after police say they found drugs in the car.
Officers with the Wilson Mills Police Department said they received a call around 4 p.m. Saturday about a driver who appeared to have fallen asleep. Sure enough, they said they saw just that when they spotted a white Tesla Model 3 on U.S. Highway 70.

Apparently, despite using sirens and lights, the officers were unable to wake the man. The Model 3 continued down the road while the officers tried to figure out a solution. Eventually, they pulled their patrol car in front of the Tesla, which activated the Autopilot sensors and the car stopped, CBS17 reported.
The officers then woke up the driver (Michael Goodman, 25), gave him a breathalyzer test and searched the vehicle.
They found dozens of e-cigarette cartons. They weren’t your typical corner store item, though. They contained THC, methamphetamine and MDMA.
Goodman now faces charges of trafficking ecstasy and methamphetamine, reckless driving, felony possession of marijuana, possession with intent to sell, and failure to use emergency lights. He posted a $50,000 bond to be released from the Johnston County Detention Center until his next court appearance.
We’re glad no one was hurt. But we don’t know if Goodman thanked the Tesla for keeping him safe or blamed it for pulling over.
