We may not need to wait as much as first thought Tesla’s Highly anticipated Y type The “Juniper” update will reportedly go into production as early as this month.
It is reported China Auto NewsSources on social media, namely China’s Weibo and X (formerly Twitter), said Shanghai production of the updated Model Y has started this week ahead of schedule.
While initial output will be low, with a reported 12 cars per day being produced, far less than the factory’s output of one Tesla every 30 seconds, mass production will then gradually be achieved, possibly by the end of 2024 or early 2025.

That would put the Model Y’s appearance and equipment about a year after its Model 3 sedan sibling, whose recent “Highland” update is expected to heavily influence the Juniper facelift.
Previously leaked images posted online showed that the Model Y Juniper will use a full-width rear light bar connecting the taillights, which will differentiate it from the Model 3 in at least one aspect.
Like the Model 3 Highland, which was revamped late last year, Tesla’s new Model Y will reportedly feature sleeker headlights and a new wheel design, while changing the appearance of the rear.
Only one interior photo has been leaked so far, showing what appears to be perforated leather or leatherette upholstery on the seats, suede trim on the doors, and a slim strip of ambient lighting.
The Model Y is expected to follow the Model 3’s lead, ditching the traditional steering column stalk and adopting controversial steering wheel buttons.
In Model 3, other changes include relocating the gear selector to the touchscreen, adding a rear climate control screen, and tweaks to the suspension and electric motors for greater range.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously said the Model Y Juniper won’t debut until 2025, despite previous reports that it would debut before the end of the year.
The Tesla Model Y remains the best-selling electric vehicle (EV) in Australia, with 16,697 units delivered between January and September 2024.
However, this figure was down from 23,457 deliveries in the same period last year due to increasing competition from other automakers.
