Tesla, a leading electric car manufacturer, has established strong operations in many major markets including North America, Europe, the United Kingdom, China and Japan. The company has been witnessing major setbacks in sales in Europe, EFTA regions (Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Iceland) and the UK. Let’s take a closer look.

Tesla car sales fell 45% in Europe

Tesla was once the popular electric mobility solutions provider here. However, recently, Tesla has witnessed a sharp drop in sales in the region. These figures are very serious as Tesla’s sales halved, Europe fell 50.3%, Europe + UK + EFTA region fell 45.2%, while January 2024 sales performance was compared.

This is a special development because of strong demand for BEVs (battery electric vehicles). In fact, BEV sales in Europe soared 37%. Overall, electric cars are still popular and thriving, but European buyers seem to be away from the Tesla brand.

Tesla’s sales downturn in Europe is a combination of multiple factors, but the controversy surrounding Tesla CEO Elon Musk may be the main reason. His infamous tribute, support for the AFD party in Germany and his support for a British jailed activist has sparked debate and damaged some controversy in his public image.

The consequences of these activities, expectations of new and updated Tesla and expectations of stock shortages are some of the reasons for Tesla’s sales decline in January 2025. According to ACEA, Tesla sold 9,945 units in January 2025, down from 18,161 units in January 2024. In major European countries such as France, Tesla’s sales fell by 63%, while in Germany, that’s 59.5%.

China’s electric vehicle sales soar

Tesla’s sales decline in Europe, the UK and EFTA regions is not a lack of demand for electric vehicles or BEVs. BEV sales grew 37% across Europe, indicating that there is no negative sentiment for electric vehicles. ACEA shows that 1,24,341 electric vehicles were sold in Europe and 1,66,065 units were sold in Europe + EFTA + UK, with a market share of 16.7%, up 11.9% year-on-year.

If we perform SAIC Motors sales in the region in January 2025, the Chinese electric vehicle giant sold 22,994 units. New car sales in Europe generally fell by 2.6%. The market share of gasoline and diesel vehicles (merger) fell from 48.7% to 39.4%, followed by 34.9% of self-charged hybrid vehicles.
