The C8 Corvette is attracting younger, wealthier drivers

  • The Corvette lineup continues to expand with the addition of the ZR1, but the C8 has already been a huge success.
  • Owners are younger and average transaction prices have increased.
  • Chevrolet officials believe that each of the four Corvette models holds a unique place in the lineup.

Chevrolet recently released the Corvette ZR1, which pushes boundaries that were once unimaginable. With 1,064 hp (793 kW / 1,079 PS), the latest Corvette is more powerful than a Bugatti Veyron and is set to become an American icon.

However, it’s just one part of the Corvette family, which also includes the Stingray, E-Ray and Z06. We discussed these four cars at a preview event last month, and it’s clear that the Corvette lineup is stronger than ever.

We’re not just talking about performance, the C8 is attracting younger, wealthier consumers. While the Corvette is often thought of as a sports car for retirees, the average age of owners has dropped by seven years, and buyers are typically making six-figure incomes. The latter helps explain why the average transaction price for a Corvette is now $101,600.

That number is slightly above Chevy’s target, helped by the $104,900 E-Ray and $110,100 Z06, and when the ZR1 hits the market it will undoubtedly push the average transaction price up even more.

While few people can afford a six-figure sports car, the Corvette has been a huge success, as the model accounts for nearly half of all sales of luxury sports cars. Additionally, the Corvette sells out in just 18 days, and this demand helps explain why U.S. sales have hovered around 35,000 units for the past few years.

As for how these models fit into the lineup, it’s pretty simple. The Stingray is the entry-level model, while the E-Ray is a high-performance daily driver with all-wheel drive. The Z06 is track-focused, while the ZR1 is designed to be more livable and be the “ultimate expression of Corvette.”
