An easy way to start a conversation with a stranger is to compliment them on what they are wearing. A recent event expanded on this idea, making participants’ clothing a networking opportunity.

Carson Edwards Jr., CASE, CDMP, shared convene Recently, he ran a project for 25 NextGen event organizers on how to use participants’ attire as a point of contact. Carson, global sales account executive for Marriott International and president-elect of the PCMA Capital Chapter, hosted a “MeetingPlanning Power” event in Washington, D.C. on June 20, an email reminder to event registrants said, “ Outfit for the day,” “Just wear comfortable shoes, bring a water bottle, and wear your favorite T-shirt…we want to know why it’s your favorite!”

Edwards said the icebreakers were well-received by event attendees, kicking off the afternoon with activities that included hands-on AI productivity tips and best practices, insights into the hotel general manager role, including how AI will impact hotels industry, a revenue management strategy session with Marriott’s Director of Revenue Strategy, and a panel discussion on how different generations work together in the business events industry.

The show ended with cocktails and refreshments – and no doubt more discussion about the T-shirts.
