The first police Tesla Cybertruck appears on the streets of Irvine

If there’s one thing the Cybertruck can do, it’s attract attention, which is why it might be perfect for the job

The first police Tesla Cybertruck hits the streets of Irvine, but the $132,000 price tag sparks backlash
  • Irvine’s new $132,000 Cybertruck for its DARE program has drawn mixed reactions from the public.
  • Police Chief Michael Kent said Tesla’s flashy appearance may attract the attention of young people.
  • Critics argue the high price of electric vehicles is unnecessary for DARE vehicles, sparking taxpayer anger.

There is no doubt that this day will come. The Tesla Cybertruck is now part of the police fleet. While it’s unclear how much “real” police work this futuristic truck will actually do, one thing is for sure: The truck is already attracting a lot of attention. As such, it will form part of the department’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program.

This particular Cybertruck belongs to the Irvine, California Police Department, and it’s no ordinary off-the-line model. It comes fully equipped with custom police graphics, emergency lights and a custom interior designed specifically for its new character. Built in part by Unplugged Performance and Whelen Engineering, this truck is sure to stand out. Police Chief Michael Kent said this was indeed the primary target of the DARE program vehicles.

In an interview with ABC 7, Chief Kent explained the thinking behind the choice, saying: “Whether it’s a lowered or raised truck, a PT Cruiser or a Cybertruck, these vehicles attract people with custom graphics and features. Crowds of people, enthusiasts of all ages. I’m very proud to say that we are the first police department in the country to have this equipment in their fleet.”

This comment actually highlights the main concern that many citizens seem to have about this Tesla. It cost more than $132,000. That includes the price of the truck itself and about $21,000 in modifications for the DARE mission. If the PT Cruiser can draw the crowds as Kent suggests, why not go with Chrysler and save taxpayers an estimated $122,000?

Public reaction was divided. One comment on the Irvine Police Department’s Instagram video said: “Congratulations on making yourself a national laughing stock. Can only imagine how the people who live here feel about this waste of money taking out of their pockets.”

Another echoed the sentiment, saying: “This is what we mean when we say defund the police. It’s such a waste and they’re rubbing it in their face now”.

Other citizens, on the other hand, praised the move, saying “You were heavily criticized for this but I thought it looked very threatening! Great video! If it can make one kid go from bad to good, it’s worth it ! ” Chief Kent echoed the same sentiment about its cost. “These conversations can’t be quantified because they are truly priceless,” he said of how to capture the attention of young people.

Regardless of personal feelings, there is no doubt that such a huge investment will indeed pay off now that it is spent.
