McLaren P1 successor: key details
McLaren has released a teaser video highlighting “What makes car number 1?”, positioning it as the pinnacle of supercar innovation and the beginning of a new era of high-performance cars. It follows the McLaren F1 and P1 of the 1990s, both of which set new standards in the supercar space. The October 6 date appears at the end of the teaser, suggesting that the successor to the P1 will be unveiled at this time. Codenamed P18, the upcoming model will be the next in the McLaren Ultimate Series; the previous model was the Speedtail Grand Tourer.
The P18 is likely to feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain, utilising a newly designed twin-turbocharged V8 engine as the petrol component. While this setup is similar to the P1 launched more than a decade ago, the new model is expected to feature a significantly lighter hybrid system. Furthermore, it is expected to have a peak output that exceeds the 1,040.5bhp of the Speedtail, which also features a V8 plug-in hybrid engine. This advancement will result in a significant increase in performance compared to the P1, which produced 891bhp.
