- A new study examines the average used car price and its estimated remaining life span.
- A typical 5-year-old Honda fit costs $18,336 and is expected to last another 11.6 years.
- Best value pickup trucks include the mid-sized Nissan Border and the Toyota Tacoma.
Buying a new car is certainly attractive – fresh paint, clear new car smell, comforting (if misleading) belief that everything will work perfectly for a long time. But for most people, used cars are a smarter financial choice. A new study aims to determine which used cars, trucks and SUVs provide the best combination of reliability and life.
The study analyzed data from a list of more than 700,000 used cars in the United States and analyzed odometer readings for more than 368 million vehicles, studied the average price of each model, and estimated its possible remaining life span.

To illustrate different budgets, the study focused on two key categories: used cars at 5 and 10 years old. Shoppers looking for a 5-year-old model can expect to pay an average of $26,206. Of all the options, a car is the best deal: the Honda fit, also known as jazz in some international markets.

according to ISECARSThe typical 5-year-old costs $18,336 and the remaining life expectancy is 11.6 years. This is equivalent to the average “year price” of $1,583. This positioned it at the remaining year of the VW Passat at $1,845, Buick Encore at $1,897 and Kia Rio 5-door (Kia Rio 5-door) at $2,023.
The Honda Fit is also the king of a 10-year-old used car, with an average price of $12,169, and a remaining 9-year lifespan or $1,358 for the remaining years.
The study did not park in sedans and hatchbacks, as it also analyzed the cost and life of used trucks, SUVs and hybrids, finding some other notable findings.
Trucks and SUVs
Among the 5-year-old pickup trucks, the Nissan Border is the best value, with an average price of $23,801, an estimated remaining life span of 9 years and working $2,640 a year. Others who performed well include Chevrolet Colorado, which costs $2,645 per year, GMC Canyon at $2,657 and Toyota Tacoma at $2,695, is essentially a tight game.
On the other side, the RAM 1500 ranks the worst value, with an average price of $33,350, and a remaining lifespan of just 7.3 years, with the remaining $4,600 per year.

In the 10-year-old trucking world, Nissan Boundaries, GMC Canyon, Toyota Tacoma and Chevrolet Colorado have also performed well.
Where is the SUV?
Those 5-year-old SUV markets will be wise to choose. Other great performances in the 10-year-old SUV include the Buick Encore, Jeep Compass, Mazda CX-9, Infiniti QX60, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, and Volvo XC60.
Although the analysis highlights the monetary services provided by most people who use cars, it does not take into account maintenance and repair costs, which is just as important in determining long-term value. Cars seem to be bargains based on annual prices, but if it spends half the time in the store, that’s not much. Prospective buyers should study the expected maintenance costs before making a final decision.
