New Suzuki Dzire, an $8,000 compact sedan, gets Global NCAP 5-star rating
  • The Suzuki Dzire differentiates itself from the closely related Swift with a new look.
  • This small sedan retains a footprint of less than 4m, but is packed with more features inside.
  • Dzire is the first Maruti Suzuki model to receive a 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP.

Maruti Suzuki has launched the fourth generation Dzire in India. Unlike its predecessors, the small sedan bears no resemblance to the Swift hatchback on which it is based, instead adopting its own style.

The Suzuki Dzire is 3,995 mm (157.3 inches) long and has a wheelbase of 2,450 mm (96.5 inches), the same as the outgoing model. At the front, angular LED headlights and a larger grille give it a more serious look, taking away from the Swift hatchback’s cute features.

As with nearly all sedan offerings with a small footprint, the proportions still look odd. This isn’t helped by the base trim’s 14-inch steel wheels, although higher trims get 15-inch alloy wheels. The short rear overhang is paired with boxy taillights and an integrated spoiler, trying to look tough.

Inside, the dashboard looks very similar to the Swift, although there are some changes in the trim, including fake wood trim. The analog instrument cluster is integrated with a 9-inch infotainment system that is compatible with wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay connectivity. Higher spec models also come with automatic air conditioning, a 360-degree camera, a wireless charging pad, an electric sunroof and Suzuki Connect functionality.

The trunk capacity is 382 liters (13.5 cu ft), which doesn’t sound like much, but it’s 117 liters (4.1 cu ft) larger than the Swift.

In terms of safety, Dzire is the first model from Maruti Suzuki to receive a five-star rating in Global NCAP testing. All trims come standard with six airbags, electronic stability control and pedestrian protection.

Like closely related Swift, the new generation of Dzire is based on the tried-and-tested Heartect foundation. Under the hood is a naturally aspirated 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine that produces 80 hp (60 kW / 82 hp) on gasoline or 69 hp (51 kW / 70 hp) in CNG version. The mill is mated to either a five-speed manual transmission or a five-speed automatic transmission, sending power to the front axle.

The Suzuki Dzire is now available for booking in India, priced between Rs 6.79 lakh ($8,000) and Rs 10.14 lakh ($12,000). Competitors in the small sedan segment include the upcoming new generation Honda Amaze, Hyundai Aura and Tata Tigor.
