In addition to increased power output, the new Toyota engine will deliver higher driving range and support carbon-neutral fuel

While the auto industry’s goals are largely geared toward electrification, Toyota is one of the few car companies that continues to focus on internal combustion engines and hybrid vehicles. But since even Toyota can’t ignore the need to reduce its carbon footprint, the company is developing more efficient and powerful turbine engines. Hilux and Fortuner will be among the first companies to get the new engine.

New 2.0 turbo engine for Fortuner and Hilux

The Hilux and Fortuner will reportedly use a new 2.0 turbo petrol engine from Toyota’s new engine range being developed. The 2.0-liter turbo-petrol engine will also be used in next-generation Toyota sports cars such as the MR2 and Celica.

While the engine can be tuned to deliver different power and torque, the Hilux is expected to produce 300 hp and 400 Nm of torque. A 400 hp / 549 Nm version will be available on other Toyota models. A 600-horsepower version will also be available, specifically for competition vehicles.

As of now, it is unclear whether the new engine will be installed on the existing Hilux/Fortuner. Or with the next-generation Hilux/Fortune due to debut in 2025. Since the current Fortuner is nearing the end of its life cycle, it seems reasonable to introduce a new engine in the next-generation Fortuner. This approach will also ensure that the next generation of Fortuner is viewed as something completely new.

Another thing that’s uncertain right now is which Fortuner models will get the new engines. Against this backdrop, speculation seems to be in favor of the GR-Sport. In this case, the new 2.0 turbo petrol engine will replace the existing 204 hp 2.8 turbo diesel engine.

Efficiency increased by 30%

Toyota’s new 2.0-liter turbo-petrol engine will be 30% more efficient. This will ensure a significant reduction in carbon emissions. Although not as good as pure electric vehicles, a 30% increase in efficiency is still a major breakthrough. A new 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine is also being designed to replace the 2.4-litre turbo currently used in some Toyota models. The new engine will be about 10% smaller in size but provide more power.

This new engine range will also feature a new 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. Same capacity as its turbo version. Compared with the existing 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine, the latter will be approximately 30% more efficient. All three new engines are in inline four-cylinder configurations. Toyota is confident in the success of these new engines and believes they will be a game changer.

Support greener fuels

Toyota said its new engines will run on gasoline and diesel, as well as carbon-neutral fuels such as ethanol, synthetic fuels and liquid hydrogen. The new engine will be deployed primarily as part of a hybrid system. They will help Toyota gain greater traction in the hybrid segment, one of the company’s key focus areas. The new engine is being developed in collaboration with other Japanese companies such as Subaru and Mazda.
