When the introductory price of the 3rd generation Amaze ends, the price gap with the 2nd generation model will widen, making it more accessible to buyers
The new Honda Amaze has been launched in India and it is proving to be a very enjoyable product. The company aims to democratize vehicle safety for the masses by offering ADAS in new models at incredibly affordable prices. That said, the previous generation Amaze sedan will reportedly continue to be sold alongside the new model.
This is not a new strategy in this industry. Honda Amaze’s main rival Maruti Suzuki Dzire also continues to sell the older third-generation Dzire, but as a commercial vehicle called Tour S. A recent report mentioned that Honda will offer the second-generation Amaze to private and commercial buyers with limited trim and gearbox options. Let’s take a look.
Old Honda Amaze to be sold alongside new Amaze
Honda is one of the most popular car manufacturers in India. The company is best known for its sedans. Recent reports indicate that Honda will continue to sell the second-generation Amaze as well as the just-launched third-generation Amaze. Maruti Suzuki and Dzire have also adopted a similar strategy.
Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) is no stranger to this strategy either. When the 5th generation City was launched in India, Honda continued to sell the 4th generation City in India until the popularity completely disappeared. The second-generation Amaze is likely to be available in limited trim levels and cost slightly less than the new Amaze.
The second-generation Amaze is likely to be priced at Rs 7.71 lakh (Ex-sh) for the base S trim and Rs 9.13 lakh (Ex-sh) for the VX trim. For context, the just-launched third-generation Amaze starts at Rs 8 lakh for the base V trim and goes up to Rs 10.90 lakh for the top-spec ZX trim with Honda Sensing ADAS system.
Both cars will be powered by the same 1.2L 4-cylinder naturally aspirated i-VTEC petrol engine. The engine is capable of delivering a peak power of 89 bhp and a peak torque of 110 Nm. The older second-generation Amaze will miss out on the CVT automatic transmission option, while the newer third-generation Amaze does.
Why though?
This engine is popular for its powerful characteristics, further highlighted by Honda’s renowned VTEC technology. It’s also a refined engine, something that the new Z-series engine found on its main rival, the fourth-generation Dzire, can’t match.
It’s unclear why Honda continues to sell the second-generation Dzire in India. It’s also true that the price difference between the two cars is minimal. However, the third-generation Amaze is still priced at the entry level and the price gap will soon widen, making the second-generation model an affordable offering with limited features and equipment.
