The Veloce12 is a stunning evolution of the 1990s

  • Improvements to the 5.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine mean it now produces 503 horsepower.
  • Gorgeous brown leather adorns the interior of this modified Italian grand tourer.
  • Only 30 examples of the Ferrari 550-based Touring Superleggera will be produced.

As much as we love seeing classic Porsche 911s restored and modified, the secrets to building a stunning 911 replica have become all too familiar. Luckily, Touring Superleggera decided not to use a 911 for its latest project, and instead took a more interesting path, bringing the legendary Ferrari 550 Maranello into the modern world.

Unveiled at Monterey Car Week, this stunning creation is called the Veloce 12 and is a complete remake of the 550 S. Sure, it retains much of the Ferrari’s original styling, but it looks much better. In fact, we think it’s even more attractive than Ferrari’s new flagship Grand Tourer, the 12 Civic Civic.

The Touring Superleggera gets a new body made from lightweight carbon fiber and a new set of headlights and taillights. These sit atop a reinforced chassis, while a sexy new hood houses a modified version of the stock car’s 5.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine.

No one would blame the coachbuilder for keeping the car’s original engine, but it has been rebuilt and fitted with a new cooling system. There’s also a custom aftermarket exhaust, and the car puts out 503 hp and 419 lb-ft (568 Nm) of torque, 25 hp more than the original. The 12Cilindri’s 6.5-liter V12 engine delivers an additional 316 hp, but one advantage the 550 has is that it comes with a six-speed manual gearbox. The upgraded Veloce12 can hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 4.4 seconds and can reach a top speed of 199 mph (320 km/h).

Like most elaborate modifications, the changes don’t stop at the body and engine. New six-piston Brembo front calipers and four-piston rear calipers have been installed. The Touring Superleggera also gets TracTive suspension with adjustable damping to ensure the classic GT drives just as well as a modern car.

The coachbuilder’s finest craftsmen also took part in crafting the car’s interior. The seats and dashboard are wrapped in beautiful brown leather, while the brand also crafted new switches and instrument clusters.

Production of the special edition Veloce12 is capped at 30 units. The conversion alone cost €690,000 (approximately $758,000), not including the cost of the donor 550 Maranello itself.
