Whatever one thinks of this flatbed truck, the sales figures speak for themselves
- Cybertruck unexpectedly becomes the best-selling luxury vehicle in the United States.
- This isn’t the first time a flatbed pickup has achieved such a feat.
- The average transaction price of electric vehicles also increased by 11% year-on-year.
The Tesla Cybertruck has generated more controversy than any other car in production today. Yet, in terms of sales, it was the best-selling car in its class in July. It’s the best-selling car of all six-figure cars in the U.S. No Mercedes, Porsche, or any other brand or model has ever surpassed it.
That might be a little surprising, given the negative press this truck has received. Some of it may be well-deserved, but the reality is that a portion of the Cybertruck’s sales figures will be based simply on what it is, not how objectively good it is. In July, buyers spent an average of $111,018 on it, but it still outsold every other six-figure vehicle.

These numbers come directly from the folks at Kelley Blue Book. Notably, their data confirms that the GMC Hummer EV is actually more expensive per unit at $111,242, compared to GM’s $111,018, but GM’s product isn’t selling as well. Perhaps most interestingly, the Cybertruck manages to outperform conventional gas trucks and everything else in this price range.
“The U.S. is about diversity, and so is the U.S. auto market,” said Erin Keating, executive analyst at Cox Automotive.
“There are a lot of expensive, high-end vehicles on the market, but consumers have a lot of great options priced well below the industry average. We often hear from large dealers: We have a way to get the right car for everyone, no matter the budget. This is especially true when inventory is high and incentives are available,” Keating added.
As we’ve reported in the past, high-end gas trucks are getting more expensive these days. However, no matter how premium or powerful they are, it seems that wealthy buyers prefer the Cybertruck. In addition, the average transaction price of Tesla’s entire model line increased by 11% year-on-year.
