Thieves peeled off Cybertruck’s “armored” windows like sheets of iron

The Cybertruck’s windows are sturdy, but apparently they can be peeled off in seconds

  • It took just seconds for the thief to snatch the backpack from the Tesla car.
  • The owner of this Cybertruck was surprised that the vehicle’s Sentry Mode didn’t alert him that it was stolen.
  • Although electric cars have sirens, they are not triggered when a window is broken.

The Tesla Cybertruck has been touted as a safe car, but a recent video shows that it’s far from theft-proof. With a little skill and basic tools, thieves can easily break into it.

A Cybertruck owner recently shared a video of his Tesla being stolen in the U.S. on the Tesla Cybertruck Facebook page. The theft was clearly captured by the car’s exterior cameras with Sentry Mode enabled, and while the video does capture an image of the thief’s face, it also shows how easy it is to steal a Tesla.

Typically, a thief like this would use a special tool to smash the side windows of a car. However, the Cybertruck’s windows are stronger than most, so in order to open the window, the thief pushed the tool into the top of the window and began to tear off the glass like he was opening a can. He entered the window incredibly quickly, and seconds later, he stole the unattended backpack.

More interesting than the fact that you can roll the Cybertruck’s windows off is that the alarm didn’t sound, and the owner didn’t receive an alert through the Tesla app on their phone that the theft was in progress. A check on Tesla’s website shows that the Cybertruck has an alarm, but it will only activate if it can’t detect an authenticated phone or key and the doors are locked, the tailgate is locked, or the front trunk is powered open.

This is not uncommon for factory-installed alarm systems, as many other cars on the market will not sound an alarm when a window is shattered unless they have expensive aftermarket security systems installed.

We were surprised that Sentry Mode didn’t alert owners of thefts as Tesla says it will, as long as it detects sudden, jerky motion near the vehicle. Apparently, it doesn’t count someone pulling down a window and jumping into the car as jerky motion.
