This Australian company will sell you a GMC pickup truck, even if GM

GM Specialty Vehicles says it will only sell GMC SUVs here, so if you want the brand’s Sierra pickup truck, you’ll need to find a conversion company.

Australia’s Autogroup International is stepping up its efforts to bring the off-road-ready GMC Sierra 2500 HD AT4X to shore.

The GMC Sierra 2500 HD AT4X was modified by American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) and converted to right-hand drive by Autogroup International, so it doesn’t have much competition in the market.

Under the bonnet, the 6.6-litre Duramax turbodiesel V8 engine produces 346kW of power and 1322Nm of torque. For petrol-loving owners, there is also a 6.6-litre V8 engine available.

Mated to a 10-speed Allison automatic transmission, it has a towing capacity of over 8,000kg and a payload capacity of over 1,100kg.

This truck doesn’t just have power. It’s built to conquer, and features a host of upgrades like a 1.5-inch factory-installed lift, Rancho shocks, Multimatic DSSV dampers, skid plates, heavy-duty control arms, and steel bumpers.

Inside, you’ll find a 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 15-inch head-up display with off-road inclinometer.

Other standard equipment includes Obsidian Rush full-grain leather seats with heating and ventilation, a wireless phone charger and a 12-speaker Bose sound system with tailgate Kicker audio.

Active safety and driver-assistance tech includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and a surround-view camera, the latter of which is particularly useful off-road.

Sri Lanka-based Autogroup International has completed the right-hand drive conversion and ensured the trucks meet strict safety and legal standards.

The 100% Australian family-owned business has over 30 years’ experience and has converted over 4500 vehicles, including recently the Lincoln Navigator and GMC Hummer EV, which has also been on the water and driven to Australia.

The Sierra 2500 is mechanically similar to the Chevrolet Silverado HD sold in GM specialty car showrooms. While GMC used to be little more than rebadged Chevrolets, most of the brand’s models today are significantly different from their bowtie-badged cousins in terms of styling inside and out.

In the Australian market, the AT4X will compete against other American pickups, including not only the Silverado HD but also the Ram 2500, another vehicle converted locally to right-hand drive by Walkinshaw.

However, the GMC stands out with its superior towing capabilities, luxurious interior, and features like Multimatic DSSV shocks.

Melbourne-based American Car Sales is handling the Sierra’s distribution and offering a five-year warranty on the ADR-compliant pickup trucks.

A right-hand drive model is on the way and will hit Australian roads soon.

What do you think? Is this another overpriced, oversized toy hauler? Or is it that Australians are starting to take safe hauling seriously and are prepared to shell out the cash to prove it? Let us know in the comments below.
