- We’re in the late 1990s when a Jeep Grand Cherokee was selling for over $12,000.
- This low mileage example is in at least very good condition.
- While this generation of Jeeps has advantages, people question whether their cost is justified.
Jeep is Stellantis’ most successful brand, but it wasn’t always the luxury-oriented company it is now. In fact, this shift toward the high end of the market really began with this model in the late 1990s – the Grand Cherokee. Now, some 25 years later, someone stumbles upon this, and it’s amazing.
var adpushup = window.adpushup = window.adpushup || {que:()}; adpushup.que.push(function() { if (adpushup.config.platform !== “DESKTOP”){ adpushup.triggerAd(“4d84e4c9 -9937-4f84-82c0-c94544ee6f2a”); } else{ adpushup.triggerAd(” 6a782b01-facb-45f3-a88f-ddf1b1f97657″); } });
A quick look at the Internet will reveal that Grand Cherokees of this era are frequently being traded for around $5,000. But it’s worth noting that almost all of them have high mileage. This particular example only has 38,000 miles on the odometer. Best of all, it also offers some highly desirable options.

Under the hood is a 4.7-liter “Power Tech” V8 engine rated from the factory at 235 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. In addition, it sends power to all four wheels through a 45RFE four-speed automatic transmission and Jeep’s Quadra-Drive II two-speed transfer case. The Jeep also features Dana axles and a Vari-Lok limited-slip differential. Overall, this is a great package that sold for $37,815 in 1999 according to the window sticker.

Compared to other Jeep Grand Cherokee models, it’s really impressive to see it retain enough value for over $12,500. There’s no doubt that condition, mileage, and clear photos helped this sale, but other factors also came into play. Seller has extensive service history supplemented by a very short CarFax record. They also shot several videos showing the car starting, running and driving.
Of course, given the analog nature of this Jeep, maybe its value will actually increase over time. Since it doesn’t have the connectivity of modern cars, it should theoretically be easier to maintain and easier to fix if something goes wrong.
There’s no hybrid package, no super fancy high-flow fuel pump, and no complicated electronic locking differentials or sway bars to worry about. Buyers also don’t have to worry about subscription services or anything like that.
